They have been using rifles and periscopes since WW I in trench warfare. The Aussies even had a rifle that fired just the one shot after they left the trenches and retreated in Gallipoli. It operated using a tin with water dripping into it. When the tin became heavy enough it would pull the trigger and firing the rifle. The idea was to trick the enemy into thinking the Aussies were still there.

Methinks the magazine spring pressure would be a tad high for reliable function, at least with the first ten or so rounds.
