The best rat bait I've ever used is trout pellets, as used in fish farms.
Tie up a few in a piece of muslin (I said muslin....)or old net curtain & fix to the trap.

Shocked Peanut butter with a little bacon grease dribbled on-works for rats,cats,dogs,teenagers,etc.! Laughing

funnily enough the pro ferreter I spoke to the other week said they are great bait in his ferret traps too.
