DJ; Next project with quilted or "rock" maple, try saturating the end grain and area closest to your fine-cut areas with stock oil first. This helps toughen the fibers and makes them a little less likely to split or chip. Also, as I'm sure you found out, you need to spend more time sharpening your chisels than using them! Hard maple requires a razor-sharp chisel and/or knife and will dull either faster than you can keep them sharp. Nice project and I'm sure a great learning experience. Having made several muzzleloader stocks with curly maple and an XP100 stock from the quilted, I can appreciate your difficulties.

Keep it up and good luck.

Looks great! A fitting memory for a fine friend. My memory is shot when it comes to names, but I remember each and every dog I ever had. I have two right now, at one time I had five dogs at the same time. That's a lot of kibble!

Thanks Don,

Last trip to the Vet confirmed her kidneys are failing so it won't be long now.

BTW Aloysius and Vince, your nudging paid off. Five minutes of tweaking and the butt stock fits square and flush to the receiver as it should.

Here you can find a saying on a beercard of Hoegaerden: "The first time it went wrong but the second time it went for the first time" (hope the translation is understandable).

And I know the feeling: once something is almost finished, you want to try it out. But I happen to know a few customknife-makers and their rule is: once you think it's finished, just go ahead and double your working hours before you get a finish that gives that waaaw-feeling.

And about your dog: it's hard to say goodbey and it will be worser for every next dog to come. And remember: you'll survive them all except your last one. Just hope that 1 day we'll get them all back...

I'm truly sorry to hear that. Dogs have always been some of my favorite people.
