Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8 .41 I'm trying to decide whether to carry high on the belt or low like a western rig. what are the points to consider? not a self defense, mostly hunting or hiking around. I need some feedback as most of my firearms consist of bolt actions.

Aah...You should have said something when you were here. You could at least tried mine. I use Bianchi Lawman for my Colt SAA and Ruger Blackhawk. It can be worn with a strong pants belt or "western" style. On your pants belt it won't be all that high, but....

FN...comfort will be the deciding factor mate. I always found that "on the belt" was more comfortable for me (not that I ever carried a pistol illegally in Australia)...lower down on the leg made my leg feel like a pendulum.

Give both methods a try mate...its the only way you will know for sure before outlaying for that expensive leather.

Cheers, Vince

I found that for hiking I preferred the handgun high enough not to be flopping against my leg.

Something like this would be good:

My vote goes for carrying it up on the belt rather than in the old "gunslinger" location. Hiking or just walking into a stand location will soon make a sore spot when worn on the thigh...at least for me. Like Vince said, try both and see what feels right to you.

FN!! Something I thought of when you wrote this, is how I managed to scar up my ruger grip strap. If you want to wear a day-pack or anything else hanging down your back, make sure the gun's not going to get banged up. After I scratched the be-jesus out of my grip strap, I'm now more comfortable wearing it low on my leg, cowgirl style. Kinda like the looks of it too.

If ya switch to a hat like Bushy and Suz..........the western rig will look better !!!

I prefer it to be easily concealable just in case the need arises.

Huh! I even have a "hollywood" cartridge belt and holster for the Colt. Dang thing won't fit me anymore. The leather shrunk.

Make sure that's a black Stetson...

Suz, when I carry a back pack, climbing stand, etc. I use a cross draw holster worn just in front of my left hip (being right handed). It makes for an easier draw and keeps the handgun from bumping against whatever is on my back. The holster I use most often is a Bianchi Cyclone II which can be worn either strong side or cross draw. Unfortunately it isn't made any more but I did find this online:

www.laguns.com/pages/4...i_4001.htm

Wonder how long I've had this thing?

I just got one of these Tom Threepersons holsters from El Paso Saddlery for my Uberti SAA. I ordered mine with the button strap. Very solid well made holsters.

Pumpkin!! That's one ugly holster..... I know it probably doesn't wear out your blue barrel, but black nylon....I don't know what to say... ya have a hat to go with it? The cross draw is a good way to go, keeps things in their own territory and avoids the loose hanging stuff. FN you GOT to change your hat, I'm thinkin a red velvet holster with white trim....dunno how that camo would look either. FN you should link up with BBLue and get one of those tooled leather jobies. Your Ruger would be proud.
