Welcome to this fine site. Grab a beer and a stump (not the one with the doily. That's Suz) and pull it up to the fire and let's chat.

I assume you have caught up on the various subjects...

Bushmaster - Thanks for the friendly welcome.

I just found this site. I haven't got past the first page of the Reloading Ammunition, section. Looks like I'm going to like it here. Lots of interesting stuff.

I'm currently working on a new load using 150gr 30 Cal. Winchester Silver Tips (the old style ST's, not the CT Ballistic Silvertips). My sons' been using the Old Style Silver Tips since he started hunting. He was down to his last box (17 rounds left). I just happen to find a box of 150gr Silver Tip bullets that I had put away with my other reloading supplies. So I'm trying to duplicate the Winchester loading using Speer 150gr SP bullets, before I use the actual ST's as a final test. Currently working with IMR 4064 & IMR 3031.
Anyone that might have any suggestions on a powder and load for this bullet don't be afraid to pipe up. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Ya forgot to mention what rifle you are loading for.

We have people from every continent on the planet on here giving us lots of suggestions, Ideas good information. We are a rather close community tht welcomes anyone who wishes to participate.

Why we even have a member that can give you a real good load for shooting branches. Razz

And our Boss is one hell of a guy. Cool ( I need the points).

Welcome OldSchoolRanger!

Its a good site with alot of very knowledgeable users from all around the world. Not as much traffic as some sites out there, but very low drama for the most part which keeps it fun and interesting.

Using a Remington 788, 308 Win.

I'll take any and all advice from whatever continent, but will check loading manuals first.

I think I can manage the load for shooting branches on my own. Very Happy

Brownie points are always good to have. I bank them with the wife, as I'm known to need them quite often.

DallanC - I even get a welcome from the Jefe! Thank you!

So Elvis, what loading/powder did you use for your last 19 150 gr ST's? Help a brother/mate here. You don't have to give me the exact loading, just put me in the ball park. I'm experimenting with the Speer 150 gr SP's so that I won't waste the ST's I have.

Now wait a minute! It takes special, carefully prepared loads to consistently kill small branches!

Elvis - My local gun store (LGS) didn't have Winchester 748 in stock, I worked up a load using 42.4 grs of IMR 3031, Win. brass, CCI LR primers. It gives me a 1" group at 100 yards. Estimated velocity is about 2,800FPS, I don't own a chrony. I plan on giving the W748 a try when the LGS gets the powder in. Thanks for the load info.

I think you already made a very good choise. Your IMR3031 can be compared to our old PCl507, which no longer exist, but was developed for the 7,62x51 / .308 Win for bullets of about 150 grs till 170 grs. Also your Win 748 is at the same level in the burning rate charts. When you want to use heavier bullets (180-190 grs), go for slower powder, unless you take lead bullets without a jacket (but with gascheck?) of 170-190 grs, because then you go for the fast handgunpowders or better the handgunmagnumpowders such als N110, H110, PCl512, ... The .308 Win (and also de 30/30 Win) works rather well with home-made lead bullets. Till now I didn't try the Trailboss for these bullets in this caliber, but I expect that it will also perform quite well with the cheap lead bullets.
Have fun, but be carefull (still is the best advice, even for young people)
