We're allowed to have them as long as we pay and ask permission first !!!

wtf It amazes me that I can get a ticket for not having a muffler on car/truck, get summons and fined for having too loud of a party or be in violation of a noise ordinance if I run any equipment before or after a given hour..........But it's somehow wrong to want to hunt with them. Scratch

Some states do allow them for hunting (not the ones I hunt) but I'm willing to bet you'll find the one warden that doesn't know the law.

I've been told that in the Scandinavian countries it's obliged to use a silencer on your gun to avoid your hunting dog becomes deaf. It's rather difficult to use hearing protection for a dog and still expect he/she will hear your commands and obey...

You are pretty close to Radar's stomping grounds Eyesplice so who knows mate, you might bump into him one day.

Yes here in NZ they are legal and becoming quite the normal accessory for a firearm. Not only do they help protect the ears of the user but dissipates the sound so that other animals in the vicinity cannot pin-point the firing point.

It appears that some authorities feel that a "Silencer" indicates that the user is intent on illegal operations!!! Ooooooooooh Scary.... "the guy with the suppressor MUST be a baddy - Lets Prohibit them" - Stupid mentality I think.
Scratch Scratch Scratch

Maybe you could convince your Authorities that from a Health & Safety perspective and that they would be restricting your recreational activities by not providing access to suitable personal safety options, that permission to procure & use suppressors should be permitted.
Ya never know unless you try - and keep pushing til they crumble. There is no logical reason I can think of why they are restricted.
Your call.....

There was a case in the UK some time ago where a guy who was a 'pest eradicator' (shot rabbits & foxes for a living) challenged the legality of not being permitted using a suppressor due to health & safety reasons. ie - his hearing was being damaged by virtue of the work he did. I understand that his application was upheld and he was permitted to purchase and use one.

I had the barrel of my 1st .22 threaded and a 'can' fitted to it - that was about 45 years ago!! I couldn't imagine shooting rabbits without it. Very Happy

A long time ago the criminal element in the USA used full auto and silencers in public crimes. The feds decided to restrict their use and so most of the states followed suit. If the state you live in allows them then you can pay the $200 for the "privilege" to buy ONE. There is a long wait period while they do a background check and then you get the "tax stamp" to purchase one muffler. If you want to buy another you go through the whole process again. Some states allow them on the range and hunting others for one or the other. Some don't allow them at all - even if you have the feds permission.

Good thing Laughing

Then I Hope you are ONLY hunting on private land with the land owner's permission!

" Hunting wild animals during the hours of darkness (1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise) is prohibited" on DoC / Public Land.
(that means with or without spotlights)

There is enough trouble with hunters shooting each other in daytime without people running around with night vision gear.
If that's your 'thing' - go & join the Armed Forces and be constructive with your passion for night shooting. Mad

I hear you eyesplice but yea nah not 100% in agreement re the safety thing.
put it this way
at night less people out n about
most will be using lights
animals will be settled
NV works on highlighting heat????? the videos Ive seen on it makes ID of object really clear...saw a really great one taking out pigs from a chopper using it...eye opening.
but yes 100% agree you better be on private land with permission or you need your arse booted... Scratch size 10 ashleys up to 4th lace hole should do it Very Happy Very Happy
