Just wondering how many coyote hunters we have on board.

Tell us a little about yourself and what state you hunt in.

My name is Chet Parsons. Iâ€™m from Tennessee and live along the Tennessee Valley (between the Cumberland Plateau and the Great Smokey Mountains). Coyotes first appeared in my area back in the early 70's. At that time, my passion was geared more towards big game hunting than coyotes. During the off season I started playing around with a few predator calls. Sometimes, I even got lucky. As time went by I found myself enjoying hunting coyotes more and more. For the past ten years about anytime you see me in the fieldâ€¦ Iâ€˜m calling for coyotes. Wink

Howdy. I live in N.E Maryland yotes are moveing into my area rather rapidly we have a real good population in western MD. I have played around with fox hunting and have always wanted to hunt yotes. I think hear in the near future i will give it a whirl. I hunt everything else i can myswell hunt them too!!

Here in southern Ohio the coyotes are getting to be quite a problem. So much so that the farmers (that normally won't let ANYBODY hunt on their property) are "seeing the light" and letting some people on to hunt. I have yet to get a hunt going, but have a few guys interested. Every story I hear makes it sound really difficult, so I haven't pushed it too hard. Is it as difficult as the stories make it sound?
Down here, there is a distinct LACK of groundhogs. The rise in coyote numbers is probably the reason for that too.

Eastern coyote hunting is a lot like turkey and deer hunting. Itâ€™s not hard but it does take a good amount of effort, plenty of patience and a little luck to be successful on a regular basis. Calling does not require a lot of fancy equipment or money to get started. A couple of decent hand calls (most sell for around $10.00), a good deer rifle or turkey scattergun will get you by. As time goes on you may want to invest in a good electronic caller. I would also recommend checking out a few coyote hunting videos. Most will give you an idea of the sounds and procedures that are often used. Although most videos on the market today are filmed in the western states (where the coyote population is higher than here in the east) they are good reference tools. I have a friend in southern Ohio that is a master hand call maker and expert caller. Heâ€™s in the process of filming an eastern version that should be out in the next few months. When it does Iâ€™ll post a link. One of the things I always like to stress to anyone just getting startedâ€¦ Donâ€™t get discouraged if you donâ€˜t see a lot of coyotes. Here in the east, due to our terrain, we often call in more than we actually see. Just keep calling, we know there out there! Wink

Find a remote speaker (Cass Creek - $20ish from Cabella's or locally 25ft wire), make an extension for the wire (another 25ish ft), and a $10 personal CD (or tape) player. Buy a CD (or tape) for $10 and you have a remote with volume control electronic caller. It will perform with anything from Johnny Stewart, but it won't have the refinements (like wireless remote setup range of 100ft - do mark it's location with orange tape/pin).

Why electronic? Well Mr Coyote will come blasting toward the sound (not you with the call in your mouth) giving you chances for more shots without movement spooking the coyote. If you will keep a rabbit or squirrel hide/tail from earlier in the season tie it near the speaker. Yet, another thing to keep Mr Coyote's attention.

I hope you have a good job, the "cheap" $5-15 hand calls get expensive when you have 10-40 of them floating around, dropped/stepped on, wear out, etc, etc.

My first hand calls were homemade using a rubber band. One of my first production hand calls was a Olt predator that I think cost $3.00 at the time. That one was lost many, many years ago. I think Olt went out of business years ago too. I wish I still had that call but last year I found a new (in box) wooden Olt #22 dual range predator stuck back on a dusty shelf in of all places an Army surplus store. It cost nearly $20 but it's in my calling bag now. Very Happy

Thanks guys, sounds like it just takes a little work and a lot of patience. At least I have a location lined up, and a friend that has an electronic caller. When that video comes out, I hope you let us know, I'd like a copy. With any luck, my 220 swift will eventually bring a few of these guys down.

hi; my nmae is roger.i live in nashville,tn and hunt in the southern part of tennessee.i have hunted coyotes for about 10 years.i killed a few deer hunting but never really went at it hard.that was until i started turkey hunting and the coyotes were messing with my turkeys.then i really got serious.i pretty much just hunt coyotes and turkeys.i think the coyote is a trophy, and one you kill.i have the upmost respect for the coyote and enjoy the challenge.i have way too many "coyote" guns, and wayyyyyyy to many varmint calls.well almost as many as i di turkey calls.well not quite that many Very Happy

Chris from east central Georgia here. Coyote and hog hunting are my favorite year round hunting targets. Great population of coyotes in my part of the state and I have a group that runs up the driveway at 3am every morning singing all the way. I use mouth calls and an electronic call with about equal success. It is hard hunting but it would not be fun if it was easy.

I have had the pleasure of hunting with Chet "coyotehunter_1" and he is a great varmint hunter and more than willing to pass on what he knows about hunting coyotes. Pay attention to what he says, even the crazy stuff about a small plastic bag, a piece of thread, and a stick (Great Decoy!).

I'm headed to the "3C's hunt" in Millen Ga just east of my home from 3-10 to 3-13-05. "3C's" = Coyotes, Crows, Currs (wild dogs). Lots of varmint hunters from east of the Mississippi will be there.

I took a wild hog this year that was walking through the middle of a clear cut. Turns out that it had a huge cancer on its neck so I chose to leave it in the field. I went back last week and collected the skull with tusk's. It will make a nice display when I finish working on it.

Turkey season opens this month too so the coyote and hog hunting will take a back seat for a while.

I'm kind of a novice coyote hunter, having NEVER had any success calling them in. But I've had some luck walking them up and spotting them while driving around, and am currently working on #57.

Mostly I use a .22-250 and a .257 Roberts, but have taken them with .22LR and my Marlin .375Win as well.

Cliff here from western Nebraska. I hunt coyotes only when I'm not sleeping, eating, or at church, (not to exclude on the way to church).
When I am not hunting coyotes I am shooting prairie dogs. When I am not doing this I am either thinking about it or getting ready to do it.
Addicted? Hell yes, nothing more fun. I am a disabled Viet Vet and have plenty of time. Not as mobile as some of my buddies, but they get me there and back. I recently bought a new club car 4 wheeler, and now I can get there most of the time by myself. If I had to drag myself out I would go. I live in the country so I wouldn't have to drag very far.

I called in 30 yotes and 1 cat in 2005,this year ive called in 0 yotes and 0 cats,tryin hard for 50 yotes and 3 cats. And hopefully no cows. also i got a "furby" called in!

I really enjoy calling in coyotes, I just don't get out there as much as I like to. I use my 22-250 mostly and when calling I have a 12 ga with a 19 inch barrel with me as well. The 12 ga is for when they get real close. I've had them jump right over me when I'm doing the calling and when they are that close it's nice to have the shotgun. Very Happy

stevecriner: welcome to the Nuts. Do you really consider sitting in the cold and blowing on a little varmint call fun? Do you really find calling coyotes is challenging and enjoyable? Would really shoot a poor, hungry bobcat that came in to your call.
