I just bought a new Savage model 12 VLP in 22-250. I put a Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40 on top. I needed an early Christmas gift. I have shot some 22-250's at the range, but never owned one. I am hoping to load bullets in the 50 to 55gr range (1-12" twist). I don't have a purpose for the gun, just wanted a new toy. I would like to load something that will reach out there (ma bell loads). Any suggestions?

I have used 10 rounds and clean for .22 rimfires on a new barrel. Is there a barrel break in for this caliber/rifle?

Thanks for any input.

A 50 grain Nosler BT over 38.0 grains of Hodgdon's H380 is a classic
.22-250 load.

I've been working on a load using the same bullet, but using 33.0 grains of IMR 4895, Winchester LR primers, and Winchester brass. It still needs work, but has shown some promise. As always, start at minimum loads and work your way up.

You have a GREAT prairie dog/coyote/rockchuck gun.

Please post results of your loads!

Now you can throw away your ballistics charts. ;-)

Am very curious to see how that Savage groups 60gr or heavier bullets, given the 1 in 12 twist. Please share your range reports when you can.

Hi Dakota;
I replaced my Howa sporter Trophy with the Savage VLP in 22-250. No comparison as for accuracy, the Savage outshined the Howa. Yes, do break in the barrel per instructions. I never did the Howa, and had it for ten years, trying everything in the book to keep the shots "consistant". It never shot good from the start. The Howa 14 twist did stabilize 62 grainers, but not 68's. If you need to go to heavier bullets in the Savage (12 twist) the 62 should work but I like the 53 and 55 grainers. The only downside is that this rifle is heavy! Sitting in a beanfield is ideal. Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome Sharpshooter Joe. originally from PA, so Maryland is a close neighbor. An AF retiree, left me here in S. Cal. I do miss the the hunting in PA. Spent time hunting deer in Texas while stationed at Brooks during the seventies and Utah in the eighties. My Sako 06 now rests in my safe and that simple 4x32 Jap Tasco did well. My Savage is topped with a used Leupold V-III 6.5X20 which I had to fork over at a gunshow for $400. Money worth spent! I had to return a damaged Jap Tasco mark IV and they sent me back a rebuilt from China which was crap. I do mostly target shooting and re-load for over twenty differant cartridges, so I do like my firearms! I cast over 250 Lbs of lead just for the 45-70 since I bought My first one(Remington Rolling Block) ten years ago. The new Browning 1885 Tradition is one of my best shooters, too bad it is a Maruko. Well, I could go on for hours, again, thanks, I will keep in touch, anf if anyone has a question about a pet load, I may have done it!,
Sincerely,Rod

Do you have any good loads for a 22-250 60v-max.

Sorry Rick.

No data for the 60 grainers. I am having good luck with 42 grains of H380 behind a Sierra 53 gr.Bench-Rest HP flat base bullet. At 100 yards,three shot groups are usually touching. Once in a while, some of these groups may have a 1/4 inch flyer. Whether I neck-size or collet size, reults are usually the same. The accutrigger on this rifle is great, but I don't care for the stock. Looking for something more comfortable, like a target or tactical. I need a higher cheeckpiece basically.
