I have never been cayote hunting and my bird hunting buddy has decided it is time to clear some yotes from his farm. He has no experiance either, so it is two blind mice.

He wants to use the deer shooting houses, after deer season ends, as our blinds. The guns are no problem. But the technique will need some work I am sure. I guess an electronic call and some bait would be in order but what, when and how? This will be in south Alabama in fields near woods.

Any time you take up a new species it's a good idea to review the local game laws. Crazy stuff can sneak up on you as far as electronic calling devices, bait, shooting hours, artificial lights, and even certain areas that may be protected.

Also check the local "watering hole" (sporting goods stores or departments that you frequent) for tips from someone a little farther advanced than you. Most hunters will love sharing 'how to' tips.

Other than that, select the gun you want to use and... and get out there amongst 'em!!!

See if you can find a few copies of Predator Xtreme magazine, which is devoted to strictly predator hunting. Every issue has a lot of how to stuff in it.
Might even find it in your local library.

I would definetly check the local hunting laws first. If you can night hunt, it would be the best way to thin your population. You will need to use an artificial light, so make sure that too is legal. If night hunting is legal as is the artificial light, please write back for details from the guys. I will just assume that you will day hunt. Could I suggest that you search the web or even some local sporting goods stores for calls and e-callers. You best stay away from howlers and stick with prey sounds such at rabbits and birds. Closed reed calls are the easiest to learn, the sound you make should be a wah, wah, waaaaa. Use your hand to change sound by opening and closing it over the end of the call. I like to hold the call with for-finger andthumb rapped around it and my other hand cupping it like I am trying to warm my hand with my breath. Shake the call in your hands and produce a wavering sound. Flutter you lips and make a tweetering bird like sound. It takes practice, I carry a call with me to work and practice in spare time. You can also purchase a Cass Creek e-caller. Most go for around $25. Push a button and it sends out the call, it has respectable volume for a cheap unit. Open reed calls are better and offer more versitility than the closed, but they take more practice. One good open reed call can produce a variety of animal sounds. I find that most closed reed calls sound the same, I use a Modern Game Call and the Zepps Rattler. For an open reed I would get a Critter Call. Good luck and happy hunting. Oh, you might also consider having one man use a shotgun, 12 guage with heavy shot, turkey loads, and the other man use a centerfire rifle for the long shots.

Fellow Arizonan bonita gives some excellent calling tips and advice. In addition, you may wish to check if there are any local varmint calling clubs; often they will pair a novice with experienced callers to assist in learning various techniques. This is a prime time of year to pursue calling coyotes as pelts are at their best.

One other thought: while there are some general things that most callers will employ, there are few hard and fast "rules" to follow. Often unconventional approaches can work equally well. Eventually, you will develop a pattern that is yours alone. Listen, evaluate and have fun.

Just on a whim, I'll also give you this idea. When I was a kid, me and a buddy would catch large carp from the local river. These were taken to a secluded spot and nailed with big spikes as high as we could reach on a tree. We then camo'ed up and sat at twilight and waited for foxes. Worked quite well. If legal to bait, and shoot at those hours, it might work for you on cayotes.

I used a Johnney Stewart Attractor Predator 2. It doesn't cost anything compaired to a Fox Pro or somthing like that. It has a remote that works up to 50 yrds. I am going to purchase a softer hand call because you can't control the volume with the remote and once you see them coming in, you don't need a loud call to give your location away. It works great for me. If you choose to go with this e-call, replace the batteries before you go hunting with it.

You could go around and scoop up road kill for bait. As long as it's fairly fresh that should really bring them in.
