Zeeriverrat1 explained it pretty well. The only BT's I have used are the 40g .224", which are varmint variety. With the introduction of the Accubonds I don't think I will ever shoot BT's unless it is for practice loads.

No need to do that, though, unless I start loading Accubonds for hunting, which isn't likely - at least not in the Magnums. My deer and elk loads are, by necessity, one and the same. Used Grand Slams for over 20 years with great results but switched to North Fork bullets the last couple years. My buddy switched from Grand Slams to Trophy Bonded, which are like the North Fork but without the North Fork's circumferential grooves.

The .257 Roberts is another story and Accubonds might be an excellent choice there. Or Scirocco, which would probably get the nod due to the heavier jacket.

Welcome yotunaman & Gonzo2112.

For the .243's I personally love Nosler Partitions. Have had excellent luck with them and my wife downed a 350BC Caribou with her .243.

I was looking into the 120 BT Hunting as possible rounds out of my 7STW but I just dont believe anything 120grn traveling +3600fps will hold up short of a Barnes X... and my gun doesnt shoot those worth a crap LOL.

At the moment for my big fall hunt I will be using Factory Remington Safari grade ammo that uses the 140grn Swift AFrame bullet due to its sub half inch grouping at 100 yards. Extremely accurate ammo in my rifle.

Dallen FWIW; Steve Timm (gun writer and in Nosler #5) uses the 120 NBT in various 7mm including the 7mag, others on another forum have had great success in the 7STW!!

Seems they have a thicker jacket than the 140's do, it's rumored due to their use in sillouette shooting! At any rate he took a MOOSE at about 80 yards neck shot and took out the entire vertabrae (big as your fist) AND exited with a 280AI impact was close to 3200 IIRC....

Maybe that will help somewhat, I've heard great things on the 120 Ballistic tip from the 7x57 through the 7SAUM so I have to think it 'works" at various fps...

Howdy. I have used the 150gr balistic tip in my 308 with different results don't get me wrong i have never needed two shots with it. It has performed flawlesly on lung shots but if ya hit the shoulder blade it blows up ( see attached photo of the entrance wound) i have had this happen 3 times on shoulder shots with no exit. The deer don't always give ya that perfect shot. They are a accurate bullet and maybe they have thickined the jacket some i'm not sure i haven't used them on game for about 5 years.

Shot with a rem 788 in 308 with a 150gr b-t at aprox 80 yds quartering slightly torwards me

Actually they have changed them, I believe these now for sale are the 5th generation...fwiw

The "thicker jackets" are on the 7mm 120 grains(thicker than on the 140's since they're used so often in metal sillouette shooting) they made them tougher for the distant "rams" and they have an excellent reputation on game now!

Just thought I'd share that information with all...

Are the boxes marked any differently? How do you tell 4th gen from 5th gen?

The only way I know how is to purchase the newer lots. I do so by ordering from places that have huge turnaround. ie.. www.midwayusa.com

BTW I shot 3 antegoats this year with the 120 BT from my 7mm-08. The load was with Varget and clocked 3100 fps at the muzzle. Shots were at 85 yds and 2 @ 300 yds plus. All traveled 2-3 feet.......vertically! Smile

Hi everyone, I shot the 150 grain ballistic tip exclusively in my 7 Weatherby Mag. Velocity averaged just under 3100 fps @ 100 yards with 1/2 inch 3 shot groups. Took all my deer out West and in Quebec as well as all my caribou. All one shot kills with no animal going further than 15 yards. Did have some bullets hit ribs, ricochet inside the animal and do weird things, guess I was just lucky.

BT or SST?

I've got 150g Hornady SST's in my .308 and I think that you couldn't get any better. Accurate and does the terminal job very well. Same technology really when you get to the BT by nosler which I use in my 6.5x55 swede and only because they didn't have any SST's! I was after 129g SST (red tip) and they didn't have any. I had empty brass so you make a decision...

Nosler BT (brown tip) are good bullets that go straight through muntjaq. Destroyes the internals which makes life a bit messy when you put one in the engine room.

Considering what we have to shoot over here in the UK, a good bullet. I prefer them because they are boat tail and accurate. Easy to load, easy to use.

Aaaahhhhhhh....... Razz

Discount bullets..... Very Happy Very Happy

Seconds....... Surprised Surprised Surprised Surprised

Cheap!!!!!! Crying or Very sad Laughing Shocked Surprised Smile Very Happy

Only in the US - BAH! Mad

Could be worse. Heard on the radio this morning that in Zimbabwe the rate of inflation is so high that what it costs for a bottle of shampoo today would have bought you a car 2 years ago. Perhaps I should just go and shoot more!

Every thingI was reading here was about deer sized animals. I go after elk on pupose and fill a deer tag an accident when one walks by. I have loaded the SST 165 for my 06 and have yet to have an animal go furture then its forward momentum takes it. Last year the 5x5 bull I shot went down so fast the rest of the herd with him laid down. They all thought it was nap time. Price on those seem well under half of the noslers and personally I love how they work. Of course all this is MHO on the matter. First and formost, getting the bullet where it needs to be is the key.
