We don't judge people on what type of more primative tools they wish to use to hunt on this site. Wink

After all we can all use your input maybe some of the membership will try even more traditional methods then a bow that you use based on your posts! Very Happy

Well, those atlatls look like they'd dispatch a critter rather quickly. Probably as effective as a re-curve bow I would imagine. We owe it to the critters we hunt to finish them as quickly and painlessly as possible. Using a knife, that's just not cricket.

Gidday Grant. In days long gone mate, it was a knife and a spear...or dart as it appears they are called in some parts. The few crazies Very Happy I know that hunt with a knife ensure that they use the correct type of knife. You will regularly hear of a particular type of knife referred to as a "pig sticker" because of the type of blade it has. It is meant to "stick" the pig in the neck region to ensure a quick death and to also bleed to animal.

But I do agree with your sentiments about "We owe it to the critters we hunt to finish them as quickly and painlessly as possible." It is the humane thing to do.

Another reason to finish them quickly is that (on a wild hog, anyway) if you don't, you run a very real risk of becomming the victim, yourself! Wild hogs are vicious, evil creatures with absolutely no qualms about shredding a human. They are fully capable of doing serious damage to your anatomy. I have the scars to prove it.

They might be viscious, but cannot be evil. They are merely trying to survive, and if shredding a human is = survival, so be it.

I didn't mean evil in a spiritual sense. I meant they can be cunning, calculating and dangerous. Bad choice of words on my part. My apologies.

Grant,

I posted on this subject some time back. I'm sure all on this site agree with you 100% on making a kill quickly and ethically. I was on one hog hunt in the south. There were a number of guys. All the ones I knew of were using rifles. There were at least a couple bad shoots that required a follow up shot or weren't recovered. Things were slow and some old timers from the area wanted to run their dogs so the guide offered the oppurtunity to hunt with the dogs and a knife to those who weren't offended by it. I tried it with a few others. Any animal killed was killed quickly and ethically. In fact the fella who didn't recover his hog the night before ended up coming on it and it was dispatched in short time.

I know this type of hunt offends some. As I've said, this was the only time I've experienced hunting with dogs or with a knife. What I saw on that knife hunt ended up being more ethical than the rifle hunt the days before. If people are personally opposed to this type of hunt, that is fine and I understand it but no way will I judge those that practice it. It's an old tradition in the south and the practice is an ancient one.

As I read this over I don't mean to sound off. Very Happy Sad Very Happy The subject brings out some polarized responses. Bonk Fencing Fighting Flame ROFL ROFL ROFL

I got my first prey this morning with a Hunter/Killer-type Boomerang that I made. 2 Woodchucks and a large beaver. They really work!

I just bought a Bird-Hunting bola from Primitive Weapons.com and I am going bird hunting with it next week. It has 9 balls on it (go ahead and make the jokes. I have....LOL!). I was practising in the yard with it and almost knocked myself out! It reminded me why I don't play with Nunchakus anymore.

I would consider that an honor!

I think I'm geting the hang of this bola. I've only hit myself 3 times in the last 20 minutes with it.!

I finally got a crow with it this morning, after about 20 attempts. Yippee!
