I am from sounthern Idaho and I've always wanted to do coyote hunting. I just got into it and it's great fast paced action. It's a little different hunting a predator. I use a Johnny Stewart Attractor call w/remote and after changing the batteries, it works great. I called in a pack of 8 once! That was fun.
I use a .243 Weathery Vanguard I picked up just for long range shots. I am going to experiment with Nosler 55gr. BT and Speer BTSP 85gr. If hunting proves successful, I plan on selling the hides. I'm new, so I don't know a great deal about this topic but I do as much research as I can.

Names clint

Lived in Utah most of my life. Hunted the western Utah dessert and South western Wyo. for Coyotes. There where alot in Wyo. very few in utah to many people and every where. I have shot at plenty, but have never hit one BUCK FEVER bad.
Moved to Gunnison Colorado 2yrs ago. the dogs here are louse and dumb. I don't have anyone to hunt with. I call a little bite here and there not enough to get really good at it. Still haven't hit one.
I Saw a Bobcat one night while in the snow cat. I didn't have a gun had to watch $500 bucks walk off into the night. Next trip out in the cat i bagged me a FOX. I Have met a guy at the gun club whos looking for a new hunting partner. the last one died of a hrt attack 2yrs ago while hunting alone. He's just now getting back into it. we will see, last week he took me out to one of his praire dog spots, we had a good time. Hunting partners are hard to come buy these days.

Names Jim, I have been hunting predators for over ten years. I use several different guns, mainly 22 centerfire, a few bigger, one smaller. As far as calls, I like to use mouth calls, although I own a JS electronic tape and a Foxpro digital. The mouth calls I use are Critter Call, Zepps and Tally Ho, I also use a few home-made calls that really work well. I have written a few magazine articles on hunting predators. I am a member of Coyote Inc., the same club that Savage Death mentioned earlier, just some guys who love to hunt, really, and share their stories and pictures. I do it for the challenge, coyotes are smart critters and the more rookies that hunt them, the better the hunt. Savage Death is a bonafide coyote killer and you would be hard pressed to find a better predator hunter, period. We have hunted the same ground and had a great time of it. Predator hunting is not for everyone, but for some, its a necessity. Its what we do. Be safe my friends, I will see you in the desert....

Hello All,
My name is Wayne, I have recently move to the Reno, Nv. area. Wow there is a lot of hunters out here, most every trip out in the desert I get to meet a few more hunters I have not meet yet. There is a lot of hunters here that say they call coyotes, but the coyotes out of town act like they have never been called before. Almost everyone runs right up to the set, without sitting out at a couple hundered yards checking out the area.
All the favorite mouth calls have produced, the Tally Ho, Syco Tweety, Rattler, and the Verminator to name a few. Also the electric calls work well, I have to admit that I really like my FoxPro.
The hard part about hunting predators here is that most of the deserts are short knee high sage brush and short grass, with rolling hills all around you, you have to pick your set carefully.
The pups are out and about, happy hunting to all. May the God of hunters from the past allow you to shoot straight and true.

I'm just starting to get into yote hunting. Mainly because I'm tired of not seeing any rabbits but seeing more and more yote scat with bunny fur in it. I'm going to deposit my deer trimmings out in the woods and see if that won't bring in a few.

I use a Rossi single shot .223 with a center point 4-16x40 mil-dot and a 60gr hornady sp over 26gr of rl15.

HuntSD, what loads are you using in your AR? I'm working on a DPMS "Lo Pro Classic" for short to medium range coyote hunting in NC. Right now I've got three loads sitting on the bench to test. All use BL-C(2) powder. The bullets are a Sierra 63 gr SMP, a Winchester 64 gr PowerPoint and a Speer 70 gr semi-spitzer. I'd tested the Sierra earlier with good results but a loading glitch on my part (detailed elsewhere on this site) prevented the rounds from chambering well.

The rifle is topped with a Bushnell Elite 4200, 1.5-to-6X with the "Firefly" reticle. I plan to drop a Jewell trigger in it soon.

From Alberta, Canada. Been hunting since about the mid seventies. Had a good scare when a road hunter shot at me (5 shots and thankfully he missed) back in 1985. I put the rifles away and took up bowhunting with a passion. Have shot a dozen or so yotes with the bow over the years using mouth calls (electronic calls are not legal in Alberta). Pulled the rifle out again in 2004 and realized how much I missed it. After some research, bought a Savage 12 VLP in 204 in 2006 and had so much fun with it, that I bought another 204 Savage 12 in a BTVSS on 07/ 07/ 07 (love the thumbhole stock). Whackin yotes and prairie poodles with the 204's has turned into a passion and is so much more easier than with the bow. I still bowhunt exclusively for big game out here, but varminting is pretty much done now with my rifles.

Hello all, I live in Central southern Michigan, we have coyotes in abundance here. I have recently started hunting them. I use my Custom AR's, Or my Bushmaster Varminter. Loads of fun. I use a battery powered Johnny Walker call with digital sound cards to call them in. Have not been hunting this year as I had heart surgery in the fall and the bitter cold does bother me some.
Last year I had 24 dogs come to the call speaker 16 of which busted me Sad And lived to kill another pheasant clutch Mad .
I did not get much for the hides, But I made enough to buy some Hornady 55gr Vmaxes. Very Happy

I'm in Lake Havasu, AZ. We have plenty of coyotes in town, but I don't see too many in the desert. I have not hunted them, but have been checking out the net to get started. I use a Ruger 223 with 40 gr Nosler ballistic tips for ground squirrels and prairie dogs. Will that be heavy enough for coyotes? I also have a Model 70 243 that shoots 55 ballistic tips in 1 hole at 100 if that would be better. I have been looking for a remote call that is relatively cheap. Is there such a thing?

Using the 50gr Nosler or heavier bullet would be better for the 223 Rem. The 55gr in the 243 is OK, but, it surely makes mess of things if pelts are a consideration. Better choices, IMO, would be the 55gr in 223 or the 70gr+ in 243. These would reduce the possibility of surface wounds which can be a factor when coyotes get their heavier winter pelt.

Up close the 40gr Vmax makes a big hole going in and nothing on other side. They appear to blow up on entry. Very Happy Like a good varmint bullet should.
The 55gr Vmax make a 22 hole going in and a 50+ caliber hole coming out at roughly the same range. Shocked
