We had an interesting thunderstorm this afternoon with lots of air to ground lightning stikes. Shocked I looked out the bedroom window to see if we were going to be targeted when I saw movement in the front cow pasture. It was a coyote hunting for a meal in the tall grass. Surprised

I had my Savage 12FV 223 in the entry hall by the front door so I picked it up and went out on the front pourch and loaded a round. The coyote was slowly working its way toward me so I cross haired it and squeezed off the round. Shooting The coyote fliped over dead as a stone. Evil Devil Then I retreated into the house to avoid being a target of opportunity of a bolt of lightning.

This might be the coyote that jumped one of my male cats. The cat survived after a visit to the vet. That's why the rifle was by the front door. There is one by the back door too Wink

There is a healthy population of coyotes around my house but they usually run at night about 3 AM. I think the storm got this coyote up early this afternoon, 6 PM, for a hunt before the storm hit. Big mistake Very Happy Yep, this coyote hunting in a thunderstorm is rough stuff Twisted Evil

Hello popgun,

Sound like one of the easiest shots you'll ever get. Congratulations. We should all be this fortunate. Best wishes.

Popgun, that's a good one. I have a similar story but it wasn't as successful as yours. Saturday evening I was sitting on my back porch on the gun bench I have set up. I had my Savage 12 FLV ( wrong handed I know) in the gun rack covering my deer feeder that I got set up at 417 yards in the back.
I had the bolt open and a shell setting next to the gun plus I'm daydreaming and not paying a lot of attention (the third wrong thing I did). I look up and there's a 'yote standing on the levy at 200 yards broadside. By the time I got the round in and closed the bolt he was on his way to the next county. Oh well, live and learn I guess. I hate to miss opportunities like that. Mad

I wish mine looked that good. Coat looked awfull and it was one of the darker variety coyotes, almost black. Left it for buzzard bait.

Headed north next week to PA for a ships reunion. I have a saturday hunt lined up with one of our GGVG friends, woodchuckchucker. I hope he can find some fields that are cut. Otherwise the critters will be hidden in the grass. Also going to visit the Cabela's store in Hamburg, PA. Always wanted to visit one to see how they compare to the Bass Pro stores.

How has your varminting been going? Awfull hot and humid here and I have been staying close to the air conditioning? Still watching the pastures from the window's though.
