I well aware of patterning a shotgun and do it from time to time. My preference is to shoot at clay pigeons placed on the backstop berm on a shooting range. I then shoot at 25, 30 35 and 40 yards. That quickly tells you where the shotgun is hitting and how good your are holding and pointing it. That works for me and helps when shooting trap and hunting. All the best...

Thoughts to ponder ,,,, I bought a SKB 12-ga. (Spanish)double barrel Sunday at the gun-show here in town. I patterned it at 30-yds on paper as I normally do . The pattern was fair with Win 7 1/2 shot
May have to try your method .and some different brands and sizes of shot . Cheers Scratch Cheers

a big mirror across a room and EMPTY shotty soon shows up flaws in your stance and how well you "throw it up" to shoulder
an empty cartridge case chucked out into water as far as you can chuck it works well too, sure shows up if you arent on the money.

I have a roll of painter's paper (used for stopping overspray). Cheap at HomeDepot. I made a 2x4 frame to hold the paper up. Place the roll on the ground, pull up the paper off the roll, attach to the top of the frame, and add orange dot sticky for POA. Besides recording the POI, I can look at the pattern density of the shot. There has been some significant differences between different brands/type of shells and choke tube. This helped me set-up my shotgun for dove and turkey. Plus I can keep a record of it to refresh my memory of POI before I go out hunting.

My shooting buddy embraces technology wherever possible. He got an App for his smart phone that is really good. He had to buy some target sheets that you scan using the phone’s camera and it gives you the relevant percentages above and below the Point of Aim. Not sure which one he has...Lifestyle, Shotgun Profiler, TT Shotgun or TTKillzone.

Ya don’t put ya phone on the mound...ya “Wally”.

You buy, in conjunction with the App, special target sheets which you shoot on, then using the App on your phone you take a pic of the target sheet and the App counts the hits and works out the percentage above and below the point of aim.its actually quite a smart and useful system mate...and it sure beats sitting there counting hits (and loosing count) on a target then working out percentages.

If I had a smart phone I would use it as the point of aim. That's the best use I have for it. Smile

I think I understand. All the things they are capable of doing means that you can't even lose it because it can be tracked through GPS.
Add to that its ability to listen and even record you when it is off and that it, the two cameras and the two or more microphones can be triggered when you think the phone is off.

I love the technology but abhor the application.

I didn't know the term "wally" had reached the antipodes - it's bound to confuse the cousins. Very Happy

Haha Haha Haha Haha

Mate, the term “Wally” has been around for more years than I can remember. When second daughter was barely in her teens I nicknamed her Wally, then changed it to Walter...because she was an upmarket Wally. She turns 40 in a week or so.
