If price was not a consideration what larger than .308 caliber rifle would you buy and why.

Ruger 44 magnum semi automatic

Hi Longwalker...I think that in the near future I'm going to pick up a
Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .375 H&H.

1. The inherent accuracy of the .375 H&H cartridge.

2. The ability to shoot cast bullets for reduced-velocity hunting loads.

3. The graphite stock with wide butt.

4. The B.O.S.S. system. ( I have a back-bored brake on my Stainless Stalker in .338Mag)

5. Short bolt throw of the Browning.

6. I'm envious of GROOVYJACK's Ruger #1 in .375 H&H

I just bought a Remington 141 35 Rem off of gunbroker, havent received it yet. The reason? I really like 35 calibers (have 2 Whelens and a 358) and I wanted a 141 to go along with my Remington 121 .22 . These old Remington pumps appeal to me quite a lot.

Shootist yur makin me blush Confused
You can get the number one probably cheeper than the crank handle Browning .. I love it .. Is my number one do everything rifle .. 235 Speers for deer and 260 partitions for wapiti ..
I only own two rifles smaller than the 375 , a 303 ( .311 ) and a 30-338 .. They are my smallbores ..
Also have a CZ550 458 Lott .. We wont go into some of the things I got rid of .. Sad

I like 35's too but there is a limited number bullets that fit in my specs. I am real sensitive to recoil and I am an accuracy FREAK!

Ok, so with the 358 Win. I have only three bullets that fit. Sierra 158 grain JHC (shoots .33 inch groups at 100 yrds.) and the Speer and Hornady 180 grain bullets that shoot sub MOA and carry enough power to kill anything that is likely to step infront of my sights.

I'm a fan of the 338WM and have used it extensively for elk and moose; it is one of my preferred field rifles.

Big bores, however, have their own following. I recently sold a 458Lott (a rechambered 458WM in a Ruger No1) and bought a 416Rigby. The Rigby is amazing; its fun to shoot and it is the type of rifle that exudes a certain aura. It does surprisingly little meat damage on deer and elk size game and will be headed with me to Africa next year. It may not be the best varmint round, however, I have shot two coyotes with it.

Big bore recoil isn't as bad as many believe. It is mainly a prolonged shove rather than a hard hit. I prefer shooting the Rigby over the 300WM and feel it is a bit more gentle.

Handloader I agree on the recoil , I recently ( last week ) sold a '81 vintage 458 win mag rechambered to Lott in the No.1 ..

The Rigby is nice too , if I didnt already have the Lott , I'd get the CZ550 in 450 Rigby ...

They are addicting , and people dont believe that a 375 or 416 will do LESS meat damage that a "normal deer caliber" ..

Where ya going and with who ??

Howdy GroovyJack

My son and I are booking for May 07, Namibia. We have customers that have hunted Africa numerous times and not all of them are well monied. In fact, most have scrimped and saved long and hard to make their return trips, but, all of them attest to the wonders of hunting Africa. And, some of them hunt for almost free!!

I have no interest in dangerous game and I don't know what I would do with a full body mount of an elephant anyway, or a docile giraffe. Plains game and varmint calling are our two primary interests. Zebra -- this is where that "almost free" part comes in -- I want to get two good Zebra.

Zebra hides bring big bucks back in the states, enough to amortize a good chunk of the expenses. Interior decorators buy them and we have lined up one source that is commited. My basic problem is whether they want the Zebras that are black stripes on white or white stripes on black, but, we will get that figured out. I'd be disappointed to get the wrong ones. Razz

The CZ550 is a great choice but the ones we have sold all need a bit of gunsmithing as far as cross bolting and bedding to preclude stock splits. The same with the Ruger (they have an amazing recoil lug system) but once done they are both excellent candidates IMO, having never been to Africa before.

So, when are you going?

Well I knew the early 550's split stocks , I knew one fella who split his 416 Rigby within first five rounds .. Supposedly they had corrected the problem .. My Lott was crossbolted and bedded before I ever brought it home .. Whether they "corrected" it or not .. I havent had any feeding issues , but know one who cant feed the Superior ammo thru his , wouldnt know as I dont use factory loads ..
I have done one PG and 3 DG trips , I have no interest in PG other than Kudu .. Yeah yah gots to get your background color correct .. Hate to spend all that cash , and come back with the wrong ones ..
So how many zebs are you allowed ?? 2 or 3 or 1 ??
Never hunted Namibia , me I aint heeled either , but I did without to make those 4 trips over a twenty year period ..
Well I have one PH/outfitter , am soon going to start talking serious with .. We know each other so that helps the process .. Still be a few years away ..
Just be sure that there is no misunderstanding on even the smallest details of anything .. Enjoy .. And I can tell you , you'll go back ..

Jack

Funny, you should mention that Ruger 44, Longwalker. 2-3 years ago I saw one of the old Ruger 44 semi autos on Auction Arms, and bought it.
It sure is a sweet little rifle to carry thru the woods. Shoots surprisingly well, too.
Before that, I bought a 375 Winchester (Marlin).
For typical woods range, I like larger than 30's....although I like smaller than 30's...and I like 30's.
I guess I just like rifles.

I currently own:
375H&H mag pre 64 Mod 70Winchester
44 mag trapper Winchester Mod94
35 Remington Marlin 336
45/70 Marlin 1895
Plus several 30caliber rifles and sub 30 caliber rifles, I guess I'm a real rifle buff as well.

Crackshot: I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but those pre64 375H&H are very unsafe and under a special recall order (Recall # "Handloader 375 Urgent"). The good news is that our gunstore is assisting the unfortunate owners of these rifles by reimbursing you $500 upon receipt of your rifle.

Please PM me for mailing instructions.

Lets see, what would I buy.... hum, how about the Wesley Richards SxS 700 NE I saw at Tulsa on the 1st. About the price of a country cabin, here bouts. Oh, gun barer, oh gun bearer, you must keep up......

That would just be for S & Gs though. I have a few big guns, a 338 WM, 350 RM, 444, two 45-70s in Mauser actions and a 458 Lott. Oh, I also have a 357 SM rifle or two, as per my avitar.

If it don't bark and bite, leave the little feller on the porch.
