Dimitri, in answer to your question.......... Smile My brother-inlaw used to have a 17 Rem and we found it didn't have enough punch on coyotes past 100 yrds. After all it is only a 25 gr bullet, even though it is traveling in access of 4000 fps it lacks killing power on dawgs. Any other thoughts on this caliber. Smile

Oh I see thanks for the reply. I guess I should scratch that out. Sad

Well 1895 you think the 45-70 can be a good varmint round instead or a .50 Beowolf ?? Very Happy

Holy Cow Dimitri...Why don't you try a 155 mm field howitser...Varmints are takin' using smaller calibres such as .22 to 30 calibre...Any thing bigger and you only have a blood spot...Contrary to popular belief the cleaner the kill( less messier) the better. BLOOD AND GUTS tends to turn most beginner hunters and varminters off...Look at the center fire .22 family. There are a bunch of them from .222 Remington, .22PPC, .222 Remington Magnum, .225 Winchester, .224 Weatherby Magnum, .22-250 Remington, 220 Swift to......(You will notice that I left out the .223 Remington. That was deliberate)..... Fencing

Bushy's right, there would be many pieces and red everywhere from a hit from a 45-70. Besides that the 45-70 is just doesn't shoot flat enough for varmints. Bushy's right, get a .22 to .30 cal. Very Happy

Bushmaster Laughing

I was kidding and thought about the first 2 large calibers that came into my head both actually having roughtly the same energy as well Laughing

The 50 Beowolf was designed to be balisticlly similar to the 45-70 but in a short action lenght. Very Happy

I dont even know what a 155 mm field howitser looks like Sad

I'm thinking a 223 as its the most popular or maybe even a 243 what you think ?? Confused

Dimitri

155mm Field howitser has wheels on it and a tongue so it can be pulled from here to there...

.243 is more versatile and can be used up to deer size game with the 100 gr. bullets. 55 to 75 grain varmint bullets will shoot as fast and flatter than the .223's. I own and use both calibers regularly and the .243 gets my nod at longer ranges. If your shots are in close areas and 200-250 yards would be your max with most shots under 150, either would do the job on vermin up to and including canis latrans.

Whats the difference between the 222 Remington Magnum, .223 Remington Magnum, ?? Confused

The 243 sounds promising though. Smile

With properly constructed bullets, it works great on Caribou sized game too. My wife punched holes in one side and out the other with her .243 shooting 100grn Partitions. That bull went 350BC.

.243's really fun rifles, very flexible. For longer shots on deer sized critters its better to go to a 270 or so but for shorter range work I love a 243.

The 222 Remington was introduced in about 1950 and is a case all it's own. 50 gr bullet velocity about 3300 fps.
223 Remington (no magnum) started as a military cartridge. 50 gr bullet velocity about 3400 fps.
222 Remington Magnum was introduced in about 1958 and is a lengthened 222 rem case. It was an experimental military designed cartridge. 50 gr bullet velocity about 3400 fps.
22-250 Remington is based on a necked down 250-3000 case and was a wildcat cartridge in the late 30's but Remington made it a commercial round in the late 60's. 50 gr bullet velocity about 3900 fps.
They are all .224 caliber.
Does that help? Smile

The 222 Remington Mag doesnt offer that much of a preformance over the normal. Shocked

I wonder what one is easyer to get your hands on in terms of brass and the like. Confused

Bushy, what the h**l is a .223 Remington Magnum? Put a little to much whiskey in that coffee cup of yours? HaHa ,just kidding.By the way what do you have against the .223 ? It has taken care of a lot of varmints in Vietnam,Afghanistan, and Iraq! The 17 Remington is a great caliber for smaller furbearers where minimum pelt damage is desired.

I can't speak for any place else, but around here brass is easy enough to get for all except maybe the 222 rem mag, but i'm not sure cause I haven't looked for any except for my 22-250.
