Yes Murphy rides again, it only takes one little mistake.
And mistakes hurt.

Pay attention, stay safe.

Ouch. Lucky to be able to talk about his experience. His mind must have been elsewhere or he was not familiar with the two powders as one is extruded kernals and the other sperical.

My practise is to check the powder against my load data when I start and again when I put it back in the cupboard. While reloading it sits in front of me label outward. Only one powder is on the bench when reloading.

Thanks for posting.

That is why you have to have the right state of mind when doing reloading.
Day dreaming will get you in trouble.

I do use pistol powder for rifle loads.
I found that they are a lot more consistent in performance when used for subsonic.

My son told me a few years back of a customer bringing in a Model 70 Winchester in 270 caliber in a small shopping basket!! Apparently he used a full load of bullseye instead of varget.......

It just takes a moment of thinking it is right (having seen the powder on the bench) to load the other powder that is also on the bench....

I only have one powder container on the bench at a time. I like to think that I triple check everything before I load. I know it can happen to anyone - especially to someone who has been loading a while and begins to take things for granted.

I am glad that he was able to learn from the mishap. It only cost him a rifle and the doctor bills. It could have cost a lot more!

Ooooouch....that's leaving a mark !!!

Read some of the comments, amazing to me how many talked about color codes for different types of powder.
wtf I have a better idea..... read the Censored label !!!
The guy pretty much admitted to not actually reading it.

Bad for him, good lesson for the rest of us! I've never mixed up powders (like Paul said, only one powder allowed on the bench at a time) but I did accidentally use the wrong loads once. I loaded .357 Mag "Contender only" loads when I thought I was loading revolver loads. Luckily I shot them in a Ruger with no damage or injury. I just thought they seemed awfully hot and rechecked my info when I got home. Lesson learned! Use a clip or something to make sure the manual stays on the right page.

Pumkinslinger,
I always use the Ruger/Contender loads.. but then, I shoot a Ruger.
I know that the S&W and Colt revolvers have trouble keeping the side plates in place with a steady diet of the original pressure loadings. That is, after all, why those two companies, along with a third petitioned SAAMI to reduce the pressures of the standard load, twice.

Rather than building a revolver that could handle the pressures - or using only the original guns in which the cartridge was based on, they tried to lower the performance of the cartridge so the smaller framed guns could be chambered in it.

That and the S&W sellout with "safer" revolvers when the other companies fought it and won are two reasons I will never own a S&W.
