I am looking around for a project gun and cannot decide which to pursue. There are so many excellent used guns in the shops around here and they are really cheap. I was in one place that had a nice '98 Mauser dou 45 barreled action that needed a new barrel. I have a mint barrel at home and a complete stock with hardware. Another place has a whole rack row of bolt action shotguns that just need a bit of cleaning and refinishing and all are $70.00 or less. There are quite a few .22 rifles that just need some TLC. I am usually an impulse buyer and as a result have quite a few inexpensive used guns. Too many choices, but I will make a selection today or tomorrow and get working on my next project gun. Anyone else looking for their next project gun? Take care...
Joe

Heck...I'm still trying to complete my last two projects - restocking a couple of Ruger #1s. I sort of got sidetracked when I found out the hard way that my left forefinger doesn't deflect table saw blades. Glad I'm right handed, but trying to get use back into that finger has slowed projects a great deal.

Good luck on your choice and let us know what you decide.

Well, I did learn that it pays to have a decent night's sleep before operating power tools....

Here's where I am so far:

The first two pics are of the one that is replacing the stock on my .280 (whose existing stock is going on my .223) and the bottom two are of the one probably going on the .45/70. As you can see, lots of work ahead yet.

Hey Single....they are magnificent looking pieces of timber mate. I can't decide which one I like best. The grain in pic #3 is beautiful. Looking forward to seeing it all gussied up and polished.

I haven't had a project gun for a long time, but I have thought about picking up a .204 or .223 bolt gun or maybe a .410 shotty to do a little work on.

Cheers, Vince

Don't fret SingleShotLover. They are giving you a hard time because they are just jealous 'cause they only have ten fingers to your nine... Fencing ROFL I've got nine and seven/eighths fingers left... Very Happy Lost a bit of finger between a bull gear and a pinion gear in a ships reduction gear...

Nice wood by the way... Smile

Only thing I'm jealous of is I have a good eye for furniture making and do pretty good with it , but I would rather have an eye for gunstocks ..

You cut the blank and all too ??

Lucky you just lost .125 of a fanger in them reduction gears ..

Thought you was a fresh air snipe , not a hole snipe ..

Jack:

It's been a long time since I have made a gunstock from a true "blank". My last several project stocks have come in rough-cut/shaped configuration. Still a lot of work, but a lot less "chisel time". I have had the best luck with the good people at Great American Gunstocks (take a look at www.gunstocks.com). They are good, honest people who are more than willing to help answer questions and make sure you get exactly what you want. In most cases, the stocks I have received from them have been of at least slightly higher grade than I had originally ordered, and in no instance have I ever been disappointed.

Vince:

Yeah, there's something pretty attractive about the mineral streaking in that one that makes it even more interesting than the other one. Interesting, because it was actually considered a lower selection grade.
