I went in today to see a mate about a box of 50 .223 Hornady training rounds, usually about $35 a box. He's sold out and won't be able to get any in for a while cause the Americans have stock piled it all - his words.
Sheeit, I ended up buying 2 packets of Federal American Eagle 50gr @ $25 a packet - way too much!.
I use this ammo for getting my gun to shoot close then use home loads to tighten it right in. Thats after doing a rough eye-chrometer.
Just re scoped my .223 with a leupold 3x9 x40 and hoping to get it tack driving.

I though you guys were pulling my leg about ammo in the US and the lengths the OB administration were going to, but hey its affecting us here in little old NZ.

Its starting to show up, and stick around a bit longer in my neck of the woods. A local store had .223 for $10 a box, limit of 1 box per person. As more stores adopt this, more ammo "appears" on the shelves and it is slowing down the "hoarders". Stopped off at walmart last night and saw alot of rifle ammo and alot of various pistol ammo.

.22LR is very hard to find still... stores that get it in still sell out quickly.

I bought two "bricks" (1000 rds total) of Remington Cyclone .22 rimfire ammo today...$29 a brick, which is very reasonable, in fact quite cheap, for this neck of the woods. They had plenty of it too. I also bought a box of 20 Winchester Super X 30.30 150gn HP for $25.

They also had Winchester standard velocity @ $35 a brick.

Radar...if there was a way I could get it to you I would buy it and send it to NZ mate.

I'm not hording any and haven't bought a thing since this panic started. Powder and loose bullets are very hard to find. I do have hunting buddies that buy ammo up anytime they see it whether they need it or not. Now its affecting our overseas friends. Wow.

Funny how people are trying to make a killing over this. One of the guys that works for me has a daughter in 4-H who wants to take up shooting. The "instructor" told him that ammo is so scarce that it would cost them $40 per box for 12-gauge shells to take the class. He claimed that they could only get shells through a friend of his who "out of the kindness of his heart" would order shells and that was the best price he could get since "the government is confiscating a lot of shipments"! It didn't take me long to tell him he was getting royally screwed AND being fed a large quantity of bovine excrement since both our local WalMart and Big R (sort of like a Farm and Fleet) stores have shelves full of them with the "trap" loads selling for $7.65 per box (limit of 2 per purchase).

I am paying $140 for a box (2 slabs) of 12g 28 gram (1oz) Trap loads - Spartan brand, and $150 for 500 Champion 28 gram Trap loads.

I load my own...recycle once shot hulls from the range, buy 5000 primer (Fioochi) for $200, buy Alliant PROMO powder for $195 for 8lb, buy wads 5000 at a time for about $120, and I cast my own shot (#7), lead is about $2 a kilogram (2.2lb) and bullet alloy (6% antimony, 2% tin and 92% lead - near enough Lyman #2) is about $3 a kilogram. I mix the bullet lead and lead 50/50...I reckon I am loading for less than I can buy them...but with a lot of work (enjoyment).

From memory Winchester manufactures .22 rimfire ammo out here, so we shouldn't have a shortage of .22...anything that is imported from the US can be a problem though.

Whenever these panics hit, and it's happening more and more, I just stop going to the range and hang on to what I have. The only purchase I've made since this round started was 100 used .38 Spec. cases.

I had a guy tell me that he'd sell me some .22 for a little under twice what he said he paid for it. "I gave $XX for it but I'll sell it to you for $YY." I think I can wait.

A few weeks ago at a gun show I bought some 45-70 reloads, 20 for $20, which is not a bad price for the components but this weekend the same guy had them for $40 with lead instead of jacketed bullets. Didn't buy any of course but when I bought them a few weeks ago there were 2 that had splits. I looked over the ones he had this time (they're in small plastic zip bags) and one bag actually had an empty shell in it, no bullet at all! Quality control had flown the coop. When I placed the bag back on the table I made sure the empty was visible on the top of the pile. Must be new at cheating, he did weight out the powder in those ones I bought.

Most everybody's prices were reasonable otherwise, but not very much ammo for sale this time. With all the junk, sort of swap meet stuff that a few chose to display, I could not find a good (or bad) bore flash-light in the entire show. Most of the ammo was common stuff but I don't remember seeing any 22, and there were cases of surplus Russian and other military rounds.

Only one answer: Get set up to reload & stockpile components when they're cheap.
Heck, several of my mates have even started reloading Berdan primed cases once one of them designed a decapping system that actually works.

As soon as my shop is completed I move in the reloading room - along with the lathe, grinders, parts oven, drill press, and so on...
