Stovey, I just flew over the coast on my way back to TX. What is all the reddish stuff floating in the water off the LA coast? There are waves of it going all the way out to the islands. Is it soylent red from all the Occupy LA protesters that are disappearing?

Hey Slim...sounds like an algae bloom to me. They are a fairly regular occurrence in the tropical waters.

Cheers, Vince

I wouldn't call SoCal tropical waters. Looks like they call them HABs - Harmful Algal Blooms (see link below). There was just lines of red goo stacked up to roll onto the coast line. Pools of it were further out - you could see the boat wakes cutting through it. Waters were very calm yesterday. I did a lot of flying off SoCal back in the 70s and 80s and never saw it like this.

Stovey, watch what fish you eat!

Yepper- Red Tide- caused by more than one reason. Kinda nasty. Depends on the toxin levels. Sea lions get grumpy and snap at feet when surfing and even charge bathers on shore....scary. Fish go belly up, ear infections abound, etc. Soemtimes the bloom will wipe out a ton of jellys, then the fun really starts. most our jelly's are pretty mild, but still sting. Not like the Box jelly in Oz...ill sucker will put your lights out that quick. Why is everythign in Ozzyland so damn dangerous- snakes, jelly's, trees....

Just talked with somebody in San Deigo that said if you go down to the beach at night you can watch it glow as the waves move it around.
