Yet another awesome day. Cool

Got to my spot, well, almost got to my spot when a couple quail tried to ambush my truck. I was having none of it so- grab the gun and the chase was on! I tracked the little gray devil's, flushed one and missed. Found his buddy, flushed him and missed.... excuse #103 and #104, it was cold and windy and, my eye's were watering and my nose was running! Lame

Back in the truck and soilder on to the next spot. The wind is ripping at 35mph or so and it's a little over 40* but the sun is up, the birds are making fun of me and it's a beautiful day!

Spot 2 sounds promising so I hang out for a few and do some glassing. The little goobers are about 80y south, goofing off and having a time. There's 7 or 8 as I can count but about all I can see is feathered yummyness. I hop out, stalk up to the party I was not invited to, trying my best to keep them from hopping the road on to private land....but, they take off running and here we go again. Go a pair to hold and break and I got two shots off but not before they got a giant joshua tree between me and them. Too fast for me and all I got was one tail feather and it wasnt from my shot colum. Getting the mount snagged in my jacket didn't help either....even had a few back-flush on my way back to the truck for good measure and I think I pulled my spleen a couple times trying to get a bead on and, I'm pretty sure they were laughing at me as they tore outta there at 50mph...we're off to a good start! Laughing

Time for a break so I roll into town for some hot chocolate and kleenex then back out to spot 3 that was swarming with grey ghosties the week before. Aaaand- skuned. Zippo. Worked 2 sq. miles for an hour and not one grey ghost.

Things are lulling so it's time for lunch and a siesta under a joshua tree and a listen for the "chi_CA-go!" call for assembly.

Back over to spot 1 for another walk through and not much is going on there sans some Jack's beggin' to get shot but I'm trying to keep a low porfile and, it pays off. Cuz a wee bit further south.....

There's birds about. Razz

The terrain in this spot is also 'solo-and-no dog' hunter friendly too...nice big thick cover patches with interspersed open spaces.

There's a small covey in there somewhere and I'm hot on their trail trying to stay with the thickest bunch.
But the damn tweety bird's keep giving me away and a few quail are blending in with the little seed-eaters trying to fake me out or were using them as cover knowing I can't shoot the chaff from under the wheat. There's birds flying EVERYWHERE, hundreds of them and amongst the brood I'm suposed to pick out the few legal wingers.

Rrrriiiiiight.

So we are hopscotching from spot to spot and I've mounted the gun at least 10 times when finally a few break off and it's party time. After a few long fushes and a clean miss from being too slow I nab one, perfect crossing left head shot at 20y. A pellet went right in his eye and he was brain dead befrore he hit the ground and I marked the spot prefectly. Good recovery. Perfect fat juciy bird. He's in the fridge now, marinating Very Happy Got a few more back flushes on the way back to the truck, as if to say, "comon old man, we ain't done with you yet!", but I was fragged, my lame hip was barkin' and it was time to call it a day. "Next time guys, next time" as I waive goodbye over my shoulder, then patted the fat ghost in my vest pocket.....

Another killer day of action galore.....that was made a lil bit sweeter by breaking in my new Benelli Ultralight 20ga.- not 20 hours old and getting it's first blood.

Had a smile on my face all the way home. Smile

The last weekend of rifle season and here I am playing Army again. GRRRR! Maybe we will get done early enough to get a couple hours in. But by the time I drive home two hours it will be dark anyhow. I hope the muzzle loader season is better, my freezer is getting empty.

I don't know what I would do with that much time. But I'm sure I could figure something out. How many deer can you kill down there?

Good yarn Stovey....would be very funny mate, if I couldn't relate to it so much.

Good to see you nailed one of the cheeky buggers though mate. Keep at 'em...the Law of Averages is on your side mate...maybe. Laughing I'd be there in a heartbeat if'n ya weren't on the other side of the planet mate. My 12g would make short work of them little Grey Ghosts.

Cheers, Vince

In Mississippi the rules are 1 buck per day, not to exceed three per license year. Also you may take one antlerless deer per day, not to exceed five per license year. So, in effect you can take 8 deer per year. Razz

I think Alabama is one per day....period. Shocked

So, in Arkansas, where I am currently stationed, we can take two bucks and two does per year. I can understand that since there are not NEAR as many deer here than back home in Mississippi. I buy the Arkansas license just so I can predator hunt and for the outside chance of slipping up on a black bear.

Wow we can have 2 per year...... that is if you can find them once the season starts.

The storm that came through the SE last week took down some trees here, and part of my fence. That killed my chance to hunt this weekend. I've been told that we are working next weekend... Maybe at Thanksgiving??
