The aiming black is 36" on the 600 target and it extends to the 7 ring.
The bull looks the same against the front post as a 6" bull at 100 yards.

That's what I mean . . My old eyes can't make out a 6" bull at 100 yards very well with iron sights. Guess its time to finally break down and get my eyeglass Rx updated. |
Is is the post or the bull that goes fuzzy on you? |
If I focus on the front post, the bull goes very fuzzy, and the rear sight slightly fuzzy. (On a bad day, focusing on the post, I see double fuzzy rear sights)
PS-
This is not with AR type or peep sights. The latest one I've been trying to shoot with open sights is a Ruger No 1 tropical

Sounds like you need to try a different dipoter in your glasses. I can get by using a pair of 1x readers and see the front post real well but lose a bit of definitionon the target. The front sight is more important than the target when using iron sights. the middle of a fuzzy ball is stilll the middel of a sharp ball but if you cannot see where the post stops and the target starts you will get somew pretty bad vertical stringing.

There were three targets involved in our match. We shoot a total of 50 rounds for score. Ten rounds slow fire standing single load only and rapid fire suitting or kneeling are fired on the first target. Ten tounds rapid fire prone is shot on the second target. Finally, twenty rounds are fired slow fire prone. The shooter trashed his targets after scoring them. He shoots like that all the time. All the best...

Gil - there are a lot of guys who can shoot clean scores on a slow prone stage and post scores in the high 480s low 490's regularly on reduced course highpower matches shot at 100 or 200 yards. Do that in switchy winds on the full across the course 600 yard distance on the biggest stage of the year... you are on another level.
Of course if you are talking about Joe Hendricks or John Sylvester (Seneca firearms) from your neck of the woods... They are on that level.

Isn't that how it works for everyone ???
To my understanding it's impossible for the eye to focus on more than one plane !!!
The target, front sight and the rear sight are 3 separate fields of view.
I agree with dawgdad that your hard focus should be on the front sight.

Yes but when you are yonger you can focus a lot faster between the target and the front sight so they apear sharper. When we hit about forty for most of us old farts the front posts start growing fuzz and no amount of staring at it will allow it to get sharp without a corrective lens. (usually a +0.75 diopter correction) It is worse on the short carbine barrels!

Dawgdad,
I was in John Sylvester's gun shop this week. He shoots our matches on a regular basis. While it is true that shooting at reduced targets at 100 yards is different than going out to 600 yards, it is still a challenge to get up into the 490s. Take care...

John and I became friends online on another web site and I visited his shop last December while out there on business. One of the true ambassadors of the sport. I shot two points down from him at Camp Perry and we had a good visit there too. He made the top 20 of the Presidents 100 match too.
I agree shooting 490 at any distance is quite a feat it is much easier to be a 100 yard high master where reading the wind is not as large a factor.

Dawgdad,
I run the high power rifle matches at Ontelaunee Gun Club where Joe Boleo and John sometimes shoot. We would like to have a 600 yard range, but are limited to 100, 200 and 300 yard ranges so we use what we got. I will tell John that I saw your posts. He runs my favorite gun shop. All the best...
