Due to drop in populations... our F&G has decided to make it a 3 day long deer hunt next year. The idiots running things won't consider reducing tag #'s to help herds recover, they feel shortening the season is a better way to go (they are addicted to the revenue from tag sales IMO). Tags are still on a draw and most have 1 in 2 odds to draw... which means only half of the people that want to hunt for 3 days, will get to.
I am incredibly jealous of you guys with 3-4 month long seasons and MULTIPLE buck tags.
I hate our state F&G wildlife board.

We used to have to choose from two weekends the first was 2 days the following was 4 days. You could only hunt one weekend and doe permits were by lottery drawing. It really sucked. The muzzle loader season used to be state wide either sex but this year there were a lot of areas that doe permits were lottery drawings. The muzzle loader license sale is way down this year. A few years ago the fair weather hunter all decided to muzzle load and spiked sales sky high, now 3 or 4 years later when the license numbers are back down the idiots tighten up the permits.

the deer harvest this year is way down in Texas. I still haven't heard a reason why.

That seems to be it plus the state enacted a 13" inner spread limit for bucks that are not spikes. Seems the deer are staying pretty much nocturnal. I'm going to hunt tomorrow and Saturday. Hope the cold weather has them moving more.
I also wonder if it will take one or two years before we start seeing a sufficient number of bucks with 13+" spread.

I've been wondering about more and bigger deer for years but end up seeing less and less. We keep getting more illegal baiting every year.

I have a Texas Game Warden that attends our church. I plan on asking her for the low down and how long they think it will take to start seeing bigger bucks. We have some counties where the hunters say they rarely see a deer with a 13" inside spread. In one county, they reported that of the first 42 bucks brought in, only 8 were 13" or greater. They aren't passing out many fines this year, but I expect they will next year.

We are in small farm country with a lot of hills and swamp so scrubby little bucks are the norm around here. I have only shot two that are over 13" but they were 23 and 26. I kinda gave up on horns, I like the tender little fellers. They're not near as hard to get in the pick up by myself.

Dallan,
Was that for all areas or only in specific ones? It was already a reduced 5 day season this year on some areas (Monroe for instance). My father and I didn't notice this until the night before opening day as that's where we were planning to hunt. We had to scramble to find a place to hunt. We only saw one puny little fork-horn on posted government property at last light.
We ended up hunting the Monroe unit when it opened and I was able to tag-out. But I thought the 5 day restriction sucked. 3 days is ludicrous. I agree, UT DWR has gotten greedy over the years and can't stand the thought of letting that revenue go...

The entire Northern region. Central is a 5 day hunt.
I dont believe it saves any deer. Lots of guys pass on smaller stuff hoping for a "big'un" until that last weekend. IMO that allowed some escapement. But with this 3 day hunt... openign weekend IS the last weekend, people will shoot anything with an antler.
