My Dad drew a limited entry Elk tag in Utah! He is planning on using his 270 Win for the hunt with 150 gr speer or sierra boat tail bullet, also
we have planned on reloading this with 54.5 gr of IMR4831.

Haven't used 150 gr bullet much and wondering if any of you guys have a load that they like with this bullet?

Sounds like you are on a good track there. About the only thing I would change is use H4831 as opposed to IMR4831. The Hodgdon powder is more temperature stable and pretty much the same performance. Really truth be told it's a wash as for velocity but the extra insurance of knowing you won't have significant pressure problems with the H4831 would be good since it is a coveted tag.

If you already have the IMR powder then I'd just use it...probably wouldn't have a problem.

Just my .02

I load 150 grain Sierra's with 55.2 grains of the IMR4831 with excellent results. I've also use the IMR4831 in my 7mm Rem mag and my 303 British loads and have never had an issue with that powder in any way shape or form. Maybe others have as Brad is saying, but I have every confidence in that powder and wouldn't hesitate using it.

Observation: conventional bullets, historically, dictate heavier bullets for deeper penetration. The advent of Barnes 120 and 130gr TSX/TTSX offer the advantage of higher velocity, flatter trajectory and enough penetraton to punch through even the bigger bull elk.

The Speer Hot Core series is superb and have been long underrated.

Your ranges won't be that far to the boat tail bullet is really not necessary. It would probably be more problematic. The boat tails are for extreme range and designed to open at lower velocities. That might be a problem with shots presented at shorter ranges. The Sierra Game King flat base spire point might be a better choice.
