Rifle season starts here 10/20. We picked up a new Savage in .270 for the wife recently and I have never really had a chance to work on loads for my 300 Win Mag, even though I’ve had it for quite some time. I carved out the time to get them done recently (Slim has been a great help with the .270) Here’s where I’m at as of this afternoon:

..270 Win, 130 grain Hornady GMX

I loaded up more of both the 270 and the 300 and went back to the range this afternoon. The results for both were less than desirable. It was just one of them days, I never really was able to get comfortable behind the butt of either rifle and probably should have just went home when I realized it. I went from sub-MOA groups to some at nearly 2 inches. A bunch of wasted bullets, powder, primers, and time.

I’ll get back after it and be ready to finish everything next weekend....

Don’t get discouraged mate...we all have days like that. Even so, 2” still puts you in the kill zone unless you are shooting at real long range mate.

hunterjoe, it looks like you were off to a good start. Did you clean your barrel between range sessions? I clean it once before the season starts (last month) then leave it be until February.

Slim,

I did, in fact clean, them before I went back to the range Sunday, but I had cleaned them before I went Saturday also. I probably put more rounds through them Saturday before the pictured groups were fired than I did Sunday. That’s why I’ll head back next weekend with more of the same loads and not clean them this time.

I gotta get them figured out this Saturday and finish my scouting before Opening day on the 20th. We’re hunting in all new territory this year, so just finding critters is gonna be a challenge. Hoping to get a couple deer in the freezer early so we can do some traveling once the weather starts to push the elk down lower (in theory anyway).

I think I figured out last week’s issue, and had much better results today Temps in the mid-thirty’s this afternoon and a 20 mph 6 o’clock wind made it pretty darn cold on the firing line, but I’m happy with the results.

Elvis,

It dawned on me mid-week what happened.

I wear contact lenses, ‘cause I hate glasses. I only need them to correct my distance vision (can never remember if that makes me near-sighted or far-sighted). For the last several years, I’ve only been wearing a contact lens in my dominant eye for “everyday” stuff. If I need to concentrate on distance vision, like hunting, shooting, scouting, etc., I wear both, but gotta carry a pair of “cheaters” in order to read. It mostly works out, but depth perception is somewhat difficult.

The day in question, I had some running around to do before I Went to the range, and only put in one lens. I didn’t think to slap in the other one when I stopped back home to load my stuff for the range. Part of the reason I couldn’t get comfortable was because my sight picture was drastically different than what I’m used to. It’s bad enough looking through a 9x or 14x scope and having distorted depth perception, but then add in a wonky view from your non-dominant eye and it makes it a LOT worse.
