Gidday all.
Has anybody tried the Remington 80gn .243/6mm Power Lokt HP ? Was looking at them today in the local gun store and thought that they might be a nice compromise between the 55gn and 100gn bullets.

I had just bought 100 Remington .243 cases for $AUD40, not a bad deal for us over here, and thought......Remington cases, Remington bullets, what a nice combination.

Anyways, any thoughts you have will be gratefully received.

In the UK Remington is seen as good brass. Not as good as say, Lapua but worth having. Their factory ammo I find a bit punchy. I had some core-lokt in .243 and found it to be a bit 'frantic'. My handloaded 6.5 x55 swede is smooooooootttthhhhhhhhhhhheeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Smile

The brass is good for reloading but as for being your standard hunting ammo, you get you pay for.

The bullets I was looking at are component projectiles for reloading. I will put them together with the Remington cases and ADI powders.....the same powders used to load aussie mil rounds.

The Power Lokt hollow point is a plated bullet- the jacket is plated onto the lead core, rather than a cup the core is inserted into.
I used to use tons of the Power Lokt's years ago in a 222 magnum varmint rifle.
At the time, they were a rather accurate varmint bullet- and Power Lokt's are definitely varmint bullets.
But, there have been advances in bullets in the last 30 years...several varmint bullets I'd reach for before Power Lokt's today.
Still, they'd be a serviceable varmint bullet, assuming your rifle likes them.

I used factory Remington 80 gr Powerlokts in my .243 when I was in school and before I started reloading.That was a good many years ago but I killed quite a few groundhogs with them and dont recall having any complaints about accuracy.They are definitely designed for varmints though,I know fellows that use them for deer but I wouldn't.

They will work on everything upto goats and smaller pigs. Mud encrusted big boas might defeat the holow point design.

They make aswsome hopper stoppers under the light when there is a bit of wind about. I restrict all shots under the light to 200m or less so I cannot give you an idea how they will go after 200m on hoppers.

I found them to much for foxes if you want the skins but very good for be-heading rabbits and hares- forget about picking them up if you blow the shot and make a "low" head shot.

I didn't do much load development once I got them into 3/4 inch seated 15 thou from the lands with 2209 I stopped and went hopper stopping. AFIR the load was one grain under max listed in Nick harveys book. I didn't run them hot so I have nothing to say about max loads.

I'll be trying them again when my 6 BR is completed.

I use the 120 core-lokt in my 6.5x55 a lot and have never had any penetration or stopping issues.

For large hogs I would see if you can still get the SP version and see whether you can load them to shoot the same point of impact- if yes you can use the HP for varmints and the SP's when your after hogs and goats- just for that extra bit of penetration.

There are several critical factors in making accurate bullets: the jacket's consistancy and its fit to the core are prime. Rem.s plated jackets on the small caliber PLHP bullets seem to answer both issues somewhat better than conventional jackets and cores do.

Over the last 30 years I've used several brands and types of .24 cal. bullets in my Wea. Vanguard in .243 and 40x Rem in 6mm Intenational. I consistantly get .75" in the first and .6" in the second with Midway bulk Rem. 80 gr. PLHP pills. (Random groups are smaller but not consistantly.) So far, no other bullet has beaten them and few have matched them for accuracy OR effect on varmits!

It has always been a puzzle to me that these excellant varmit/target bullets get so little recognition and attention.

not sure what your intention for the bullet is...varmint vs. larger game. i happen to like the 85 gr. Sierra HPBT gameking. talking to the techs there i was told that their HPBT gamekings are the toughest bullets they make. they also shoot very well in my Rem 600 (with original vent rib intact Very Happy

). can lay 3 shots at 100 meters into 5/8" Very Happy

Have to agree with bradking1, have had excelant luck with the Sierra 85 grain Gameking. The last deer I took with one went thru the lungs and out the shoulder.

Thanks guys. Haven't considered the gamekings, but I certainly will now. I will be using the loads for general hunting purposes.....rabbits to pigs to deer (usually fallow or red). Our pigs aren't as big and as hard to kill as the ones you guys have in places over there so a .243 should be sufficient.

I have only been using 70 gr bullets to date so I'm thinking that a heavier bullet will be a bit more versatile. However I only want one bullet to make loading and hunting easier.

The speers have a BC of .4 and shoot a fair bit flatter than some of the others in that weight range with BC's in the mid .3's

Vince, I load the Hornady 87 gr BTHP in my two son's 6mm's and they use them for everything from coyotes to deer, incl our big mule deer. Smile

I prefer the idea of SP over HP but I think I know which way I will go now. The 70gn have been good, but I like the idea of a slightly heavier bullet. I am currently using Hornady and I know their quality, but then again I have also used Speer in the past so all I need do now is select a brand. Love this shooting/hunting sport....offers so many variables.

Time to ressurect this one guys.

I bought a couple of hundred Remington 80 grain PSP and gave them a try. Loaded them with 38 grains of 2208 (Varget), av velocity is 3057 fps, av group size 2.25 inches....not good.

Anybody had any experience with these bullets in the .243?

Any suggestions as to tightening the group a bit? Going to try redoing the loads starting at 36.5 grains and going up in half grain increments to 38.5 grains. See what the groups do.

Try the Ladder method. Load 1 from your starting load then increase in .3 gr increments, 1 round for each charge, to your max listed load. Fire a fouler round then fire, let cool, fire, let cool...etc. until you get all the rounds in the target. Be sure to record the hits while the barrel cools by numbering the shots according to the charge. You will see the bullets climb as you shoot and you will also see a grouping of rounds at about the same level, 3 or 4 closest rounds, and they should be obvious. Pick the middle charge and try them for group. That should be your accuracy load for that set of components and seating depth. Keep you eye open for Winchester brass. Winchester brass is more consistent than remington as far as case capacity and case weight. Don't get me wrong, Remington brass will work but Winchester gives more consistant results. (I shoot both but only buy Winchester now.)

During the time I was not reloading I used Remington CL ammo and it always performed well on deer and other medium game in my 270 and 243. CL bullets are good and accuracy if good though not the accuracy you would get with a premium bullet i.e. Sierra Game King,r Nosler Partitions, or Hornady SST's.
