Hahaha, True Bushy.

I am making a little shell holder and a remote drop firing mechanism to try to fire that thing,

The shell would be suspended facing down in a 100x100x3 HRS section. I guess it should be strong enough, since there would not be anything in front of the primer.

I would think twice about that idea mate !!!! Unless you have something heavy to support the primer when it fires it will blow backwards out of the case. Don't ask how I know this...lets just say a .50 BMG primer...nah...lets not go there, not nice rememberings. Embarassed Embarassed Sad Laughing

Thanks for concern Vince,
I assure that there is a "breech block" to rest the head , thus the primer is fully supported.
The support is made of a piece of 6mm bisalloy (Oz made armor plate).
Plus we are going to be at least 10 meters away when its going to happen.

Of course, photos will be supplied as soon as we can arrange to make the rig.

What is the length in mm? I see the head is 62mm and the mouth 40 from your original post.

Interesting topic. Mere possession of these rounds if they are alive might be considered a "destructive device" in these parts. As such, you might come to the attention of the authorities. Take care...

311mm is the length of the brass.

Okay my friend got back to me:

Same as English Mike with a few extra tidbits and possibilities.

40MM Bofors USA gun designation is 40mm/56 Army M1(AA)
Manufacture Date is December 1943
Type is Mk 2 high explosive and the designation makes this a US design shell as does the primer.

The mark in the small triangle may indicate the manufacturer or if it has an anchor that it was made originally for the navy. He says that this doesn't mean it was delivered to the navy as they were interchangeable with ones meant for army guns. If it is an anchor it was most likely produced at the Charlotte North Carolina plant which was managed by the US Rubber Company. All these guns were percussion fired.

He sent me this link to a site that he contributes to on a regular basis.

Thanks for the info MacD.

================================
Update on the cases:

I put one of the case inside my ultrasonic cleaner with citric acid solution as the cleaning media.
After 30 minutes, I found that a lot of gunk came off the primer and turn the cleaning solution murky black.
i have no conclusion on this.

I slice (carefully) one of the case near the primer to see if I could find out how the primer were attached.
Somehow it seems that the primer is crimped in place rather than screwed on.

Due to some work commitments, we are going cancel machining the breech block on the weekend.
We might try to do this next week instead.
