Sorry, it was probably me bringing up the fact that the Nosler partitions can have a good B.C. regardless of the fact that they are not really boat tailed bullets. I think the mention of B.C. began the sidetracking from the OP's question. Whether or not he needs a flat shooting round is a valid point to make. Within 200 yards there is no meaningful difference between a sleek plastic tipped bullet and a blunt round nose in the same weight and started at the same velocity (as an extreme example).

As per his original question, I'd happily ditch the 150g SST for the 200g (or even 180g Partition) for use in elk hunting. While the heavier partitions will have a lower muzzle velocity their better B.C.'s will help. There's only going to about 6" difference at 500 yards...

Concur. Even though trajectory drop may be within 6 to 12 inches at 500 yards, the energy and wind drift advantage of a higher BC bullet is even more important to me.

Higher BC's don't always translate to that great of an improvement........I advise using Point Blank in determining if the gain is worth it.

Example:
30 cal 165gr Partition BC .410
30 cal 200gr Partition BC .481

This translates to only the 165 being approximately 6 inches flatter shooting and only about 100 ft. lbs. extra energy with 1 inch less drift (10 mph) at 500 yards for the 200gr.

Wow, thank you very much everyone for your input. I apologize for my absence in the discussion, but a week without the internet and life just getting plain busy kept me from staying involved. I think to sum it up the primary question everyone is asking what distance will i be shooting, prob 300-500yds. I'd love to be shooting further but just not confident any further. However i've also heard some random fact that the avg distance an animal in my area is taken is like 160 yds or something, I can rarely recall an intsance myself where that was the case but that too might be something to consider. Thanks again everyone!

thank you for getting back johnbra.
I personaly use a big fat heavy load and carry a sleek fast accurate load incase of a long shot that way I get the best of both worlds. my rifle is pretty close to smack on with the heavy at 100 yrds and is a couple of inches high with the other load.
