I put the final adjustments on my Mod. 111, .270 today. I found the right Factory ammo that works in this Rifle. Federal Premium 130 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip* Nothing special about the Rifle, Mod. 111, .270 with a Nikon Monarch 3X9X40 BDC. I replaced the stock trigger with the Sav. 2 Rifle Basix set at 20 oz. 1/2"group @ 100 yds. For me is good. I haven't checked the BDC to see how close it will be at 200, 300, etc. But where I hunt 200 yds. would be the Max. Real happy with it's preformance. This will be the first year with this Rifle, only a month away, can't wait.

Tis the season for sure. Nice shooting with that 111 and the .270 is a great round. I had the bug myself yesterday to do a check on my rifles.
The old Bob was still right in their where it belonged and finished testing some loads for my new built 6MM. It shot awesome. Probably will use it this year since its still a virgin. Good luck this season. Smile

I love my .270. Here is a link to a topic that has an excel spread sheet that will allow you to calculate how closely your BDC reticle matches your rifle.

Slimjim has a good article there but since your hunting range will be under 200 yards I think I would set up a 4" (+/- 2") point blank zero out to 250yards and call it a day. That is 1.8" high at 100 yards and dead on at 211 yards for that load according to Point blank. Add 6 1/4 moa clicks to your 100 yard zero and hold on the kill spot!

I have it dead on at 100 yd now, I set most of my rifles a 1.5" high at 100. With the BDC reticle on this scope is supposed to be set at 100 and each mark for a standard non magnum would be 200-300-400-500, just an estament. To know for sure I will have to test it for myself. For long range hunting I have my 7 mm. mag with a Leupold Vari-X 111, 4.5X14X50 with the target turrets. It's all good, They both shoot better than me.

I guess what I am saying is you have more scope than you need for a 200 yard shot at a deer or coyote. I have a BDC reticle on a Nikon buckmaster scope and I know how they are intended to to be used and I thought it was a cool reticle when I bought it but for 99.5% of the shooting I do a flat 4"point blank zero is really a lot more practicle.

If I have a longer shot I have time to spin the turret up the proper number of clicks based on the data I have taped to my stock rather than a diagram of which part of which circle was 315 yards and which was 346 yards because they do not match with even yardage and the damn deer never stand at exactly 300 yards anyway! I found myself using kentucky windage more with the BDC than with a dot or Plex reticle.

Anyway - It sounds like you have a good load and a nice setup. Shoot straight!

I ran your load through the BDC Reticle Comparison Calculator in the Excel Spread Sheet posted in the topic above assuming a 3050 fps muzzle velocity.

With a 100 yd zero the .270 shot flatter than the BDC reticle If you sight it in for 200 yards it was very close to being spot on and was within an inch at all ranges. You would be spot on all the way out to 500 yards and 1.8 inchs high at 600 if you reduced your magnification slightly to 8.75x.

.270 WIN 130gr Nosler BT (Assume MV 3050 fps)

Nikon BDC Reticle - Difference from Actual @ 9x

Range_______100 zero
100___0.0_____0.0
200___-2.9____1.1
300__-10.8____2.7
400__-24.6____5.4
500__-45.5____9.5
600__-74.6___15.4

Range_______200 zero
100___1.4
200___0.0_____0.0
300__-6.5_____-0.5
400__-18.9____-0.9
500__-38.4____-0.9
600__-66.1____-0.1

I think Dawgdad has good advice for both your hunting situation and for the best match for your BDC reticle. I also hope this demonstrates the value of the BDC Reticle Comparison Calculator.

Thanks Guys, lots of help. 1.4" high @ 100 yd. is the way I'll set it up.
At My range I can only shoot 100 yds. My brother has a 300 yd. range I'll try this out. I have a Chronograph I'll check the MV on this load as well. Thanks Again.

glockman55 how goes it with that fine rifle??? havent seen any photos of game yet. if you shoot in heavy brush country try some heavy loads out. my ol mod 70 pokes 170 grn loads dead on at 100 and my 130s 3" high at same range.I dont have a fancy reticle as any deer out to 350ish is in big trouble..

The Rifle shoots fabulous, I never seen a shooter, ( In my eyes) this year to try it out. I will be out when the snow is on the ground for some Yotes this winter with the .270..Thanks BDC, your calculations on that load are spot on!!..

If you get to reloading then try Sierra's 90gr varmint bullets for your 'yote loads. #1800
I found them very accurate using RL15.
