Rick
It seems to me that I read that Hornady makes the TAP bullet in a 60 gr.
You might check that out.

Just thinking

Hornady makes the V-Max in 60gr as well. Dont know as the tap bullet is not just a V-Max. And the Tap is only available in loaded ammo.

I bought some off Ebay back before they started their crazy no gun related items shit.
When I bought them I seem to remember that the guy selling them said something about not yet available to the public, but that was a couple of years ago. I would think by now that Hornady would make them available for mass consumption.

Hornady's website showed loaded ammo labeled TAP but doesn't say which bullet they used for it. No "TAP" bullets listed.

The bullets look an awful lot like V-Max though dont they? Surprised

I bought a Remington SPS "Varmint" in .223 for $50 less than the Savage would have cost.
Then trigger is very crisp with *zero* creep or over travel. Even supposed to be adjustable according to the sales guy. We'll see...Even if I have to buy a Timminy trigger....at least I have a .223 now.

Ok, took it to the range and got it on paper by pulling the bolt and lining up the bore onto the target then adjusting the scope. At 50 yrds I was off by 1 1/2" from the bullseye. I didn't adjust til I fired 4 rnds for grouping....all 4 could be covered by a dime. Not bad I think for a gun I've never fired.
Them gophers better bring their "A Game" if they expect to be one up on me.

My ar likes 60gr v-max with 25gr benchmark, cci br primer, out of it's 16 inch 1-9 twist. The barrel was also lapped with TUBB final finish bullets.

I have a 24" Harris 1 in 8 on my AR. I use 52's and 55's they both work very well in a 1 in 8. I don't usually shoot past 400 yards though. Heck, I have trouble seeing little targets that far off even with a scope. I haven't tried anything heavier as the 52's and 55's seem to work just fine on coyotes, rabbits, fox, pdogs, and paper.

to try out loads get hold of a few and try them out. our nz trade me auction site has 10 projectile trial packs in all sorts have a look around you may find the same sort of option. the cost of buying them at $1ish each may seem steep but if they dont work you dont have 90 more to get rid of.

....But the 1:9 twist would not shoot the heavier bullets without really upping the powder charge. Now I was shooting open sights, with a scope you get a lot more distance a lot easier. I have never hunted p dogs so I dont know what the normal distance is. For ground hogs which are a bit larger i like shooting the .308 about 500-800 yds. The .223 out to 600 specially with a scope. But again that will have a 1:8 and I'd use the 77 or 75 gr bulets.

Compshooter

I believe the comment regarding pushing velocity to stabilize the heavy bullets underscores the real objective of twist rates, to get a bullet to a rotational speed of near 300,000 rps, but at least over 250,000 rps. If the twist is constant and velocity drops, bullet rotation speed is reduced and accuracy suffers. So you push the charge, increase velocity until a reasonable RPS is attained. Over spinning can introduce increated yaw and bring out even the most minute surface and balance defects.

We've discussed this elsewhere but...

The twist rate is related to bullet LENGTH and dia, not weight. For .224" diameter the approximate maximum bullet lengths for a given twist would be:

1 in 14" - 0.65"
1 in 12" - 0.75"
1 in 10" - 0.90"
1 in 9" - 1.00"
1 in 8" - 1.13"
1 in 7" - 1.29"
