450 Bushmaster
Hornady introduces big bore performance for the AR platform.
450 BushmasterNicknamed "The Thumper," the new 450 Bushmaster is the most radical cartridge ever chambered in production AR-15 type firearms. Hornady brings big bore performance to the most popular semi-automatic rifle in America — opening a whole new world of hunting to the battle-proven platform.
Hornady engineers worked closely with the Bushmaster design team building the cartridge to wring every last ounce of performance from the AR-15 without sacrificing any strength or reliability.
Well suited to hunt any North American game, the 450 Bushmaster will quickly become a favorite of bear country guides. By simply switching uppers, shooters can go from the prairie dog towns of South Dakota to bear country in the north woods!
* The 450 Bushmaster fires Hornady’s 0.452†250 gr. SST-ML featuring Hornady’s Flex Tip™ technology.
* The overall cartridge matches the 223 Remington at 2.250â€, but uses a specially designed magazine.
* The SST’s sleek profile makes for surprisingly flat trajectories and tremendous downrange energy.
Put it all together, and you have a cartridge that gives your AR series rifle a serious attitude adjustment! |
The 50 caliber Bewolf that is the size of the 223 magazines is comparable to a 45-70 so I wonder what this will be like. But still they picked a good name though didnt they Bushmaster ??

I kinda rather doubt it. Besides I have a feeling that that platform, as they call it, just won't take that kind of punishment. Unless they completely manufactured a new rifle in the AR likeness. Really can't see it selling all that well with all the much better rifles already chambered for that cartridge or similar...
There you go...Ante up...Who would buy it...I won't.

Bushmaster,
The 450 Bushmaster like its other large bore calibers for the AR-15 are in standard operating pressures for it.
Still the 450 Bushmaster when I first read about it just before I originally posted this sounds interesting sort of like Galan's 300 Whisper project. A 45 caliber rifle for big game in a small enough action for a short action rifle. Might just build myself one in a few years once the ammo becomes easyer to get and its "widly accepted". Need a big game rifle anyways.

I don't see the need for it ........ I won't be running out to find one either.

I have a few problems with trying to make the game (animal) fit the 'platform' also.
My first priority when I drop the hammer on any animal is, I want it dead... as quickly and humanely as possible. Groceries and hides, for me, are secondary.
There is a plethora of gun/caliber/ammo combinations available which meet or exceed terminal operating pressures/energies for all current species of game.
I love research and development, but often we 'want' something to work because of preferences in style or action, more than we 'need' it to work.

Hmmmm...looks to me like another pistol powered cartridge in a a very expensive "platform".
Gotta agree with 4rum on this. There are lots of calibers out there that will do a better job. More power= humane kills at the ranges most of us will hunt. Less noise? Not much!
I'd love to have a good M1 Carbine, but would not use it EVER on anything beyond 100 yds. The good old 30-30 will do almost anything better, except look "tactical".
Buuuut...whatever floats your particular watercraft.
