I was wondering if anybody has any specs for reloading the 300 wsm using reloader 19 and 180gr accubonds , the info in the database conflicts with alliants info as far as the o.a.l. are concerned . currently my loads are 68gr rel-19 with o.a.l 2.85 but my velocity suck! 2750-2800 lookin for the 3000 mark. This is only the second calibur i've reloaded for so any info would be greatly appreciated .

Sakamoto,

On the Hodgdon site the fastest velocity listed is with IMR4350. It shows a maximum velocity of 2991. If you want faster bullets you will have to drop your weight , change to a different powder, change to a different bullet or change to a different cartridge.
Are you measuring your velocity with a chronograph? Your listed velocity seems to reflect real world velocities - Most reloading information is from 100 to 200 fps faster than I get with my rifles. Maybe my bores are just tighter than the bores of their test rifles and maybe their conditions are different enough to relect the best velocity available and I don't shoot under those conditions. What ever the reason, I have found through testing with my rifles and those of my friends that one rarely approaches the maximum velocity listed. By the time I get my loads to produce accurate loads the powder charge doesn't yet approach maximum listed charge and velocity is somewhere below the velocity listed for my loads. Accuracy at 2800 is far better than a miss at any velocity. I tume my loads for sub MOA groups and they usually reflect 1/2 MOA on the targets.

thanks for your input , i'm going to make some different rounds and see what works best i was hoping someone already had something worked out . At an o.a.l of 2.85 it was starting to crunch a bit so my concern was with alliants specs of 2.75 , I was in this same perdicament with trying to find good info with my 7mm ultra mag.

hornady says you can. rel 19 is hotter than rel 22 and the spec sheets show the rel 19 to be faster than rel 22 but lots of guys are getting good speed and accuracy with the rel 22 and 180gr bullets

Win Factory SuperX 180WSM = 2970fps
Out of my Tikka = 2940fps 1" groups
71grns RL22 180grn Partition =2870fps 5 shot group 3/4"
67.5grns H4831SC 200grn Woodleigh PSP = 2750fps 1" groups
150grn Sierras SPBT 66.5grn Win760 1/2" Very Happy .
Win Factory 180grn Accubonds average 1/2" as well.
Check you reloading data and start 10% below and see what your rifle likes. I got my data from various souces and it may be different to yours.
Nosler quote RL22 at 69grn Max for 180grn. My Alliant manual doesn't quote it.
Hodgdon quote H4831 for 200's at 66.5 max
And Winchester quote Win760 at 71max.
Over all length was magazine length 2.8", 9 1/2M Primers, Win brass
With Factory ammo coming out like it does why bother just try their 180 Accubond load you more than likely won't better it.
If you want faster go the 300/378 or 300RUM

It sounds like you are not aware that some guns are being made without a tapered troat into the rifling. Winchester is bad about this. They decided some time ago to cut chambers without a throat. Some manuals use a shorter OAL to accomodate the Winchester chamber. If you can set your bullet out further than the manual, without engaging the rifling, try it, see how it works for you. Just make sure the round functions in the magazine.

You might try shortmag.com a site dedicated just to the Win and Rem short mag guns.

I have two 300 WSM guns and found that the very best powder to achieve the highest velocity and best accuracy, at the same time, was VN 560. I have shot VN-560 with 168s and 180s both gave very good accuracy with the 168s running just over 3,200 (.25) and the 180s just over 3,000 (.88). My 300 WSM guns are built on MRC actions with Lothar Walther barrels and are chambered with reamers built by Clymer with a throat, so my OAL data will not do you much good if you are working without a throat or a short magazine.

As to compressed charges, if you work up to a compressed charge and you have no pressure problems, do not worry about it. Some powders love to be compressed and some, like H-4831, love to be highly compressed.
Ed

I load for three 300WSM's. If you want velocity and accuracy give Ramshot Hunter a try.

I've been reloading for my Browning Stainless and it seems to like 64.4 grains of H414 with 165 grain Nosler and Hornadys. I went to the Hornadys for cost considerations but the results have still been good. I might need to go to 180 grain bullets, and then try H414 and IMR 4350 loads. I didn't have good luck with the Barnes Bullets, but that is nothing against the bullets;they work great on game, just not as tight a group when I was starting out. Still getting sticker shock for bullet cost too.

I haven't chronographed the load but I'm thinking it is 2970 -3020 fps.

If you wanted to duplicate 180 grain .30-06 Remington factory speeds what powder would you choose.

I know from my experience that most of the published velocities in the manuals are between 100 and 200 fps faster than my guns get with the listed components and data. A slightly tighter or rougher barrel can slow the bullet down while increasing pressures. A short throat can contribute in the same way. Barrels, and the guns they are on, are individuals and no two guns will give the same velocity with the same load any more than any two guns may shoot larger or smaller groups using the same loads. The sound advice is to start with the starting load with the specified OAL and work toward the maximum load while watching for accuracy and signs of over-pressure.
