|
I am heading for Zimbabwe again this year. Buffalo and various other plains game are on the menu. I am loading my 375 H&H with 350g softs and solids by Woodleigh. I would like to know if anyone out there has had any experience with heavy for caliber loads like the above. I need about 2350 fps or better for velocity. I have a couple of loads that are OK but would like to experiment a bit more before final loadings.

You are probably more versed on the 375 than I am with mine but I looked at a website 'over there' that has loads for the 375 H&H listed. Not one bullet over 300 grains either soft or solids. The only use I have seen for the 350's is in the larger .375 magnums, i.e. 375 Weatherby Mag. and up
This is the page that I checked.
375 H&H Loads

Welcome to the site
I always liked Woodleigh Weldcores, however, would you consider going down to a very effective 300gr. Tungsten in an African Grand Slam? With 78.5 grains of AA4350 i was at 2470fps. and although never used by me, (but only to punch paper) an old friend said the performance was second to none with how well and hard it hit when he went there.

My 25th edition of the Hodgdon Powder reloading manual lists several loads that seem to meet your criteria. They also list some heavier 350 grain bullets - at slower velocities of course but if you need the heaviest of bullets for the game you are after then it is there.

I have done three DG hunts and buff .. The Speer AGS Tungsten that 10 ring speaks of is a good , nah , great bullet .. Only issue I see is you're cutting into the powder room a good bit with a 350 and a 3.600" COAL .. My 375 is a No 1 so I can load way out there .. But it isnt a DG rifle ..
If buff is on the menu , I would SERIOUSLY consider a 416 Rem or Wby or a 458 Lott ..
I dont know if you have done a buff before , but they are immune to lead poisoning .. I have seen them absorb quite a bit and keep on coming ..
The 375 is marginal , on a good day , for buff .. They're fine if you're first shot is " perfect " , if not , well things can get , shall we say ,
" interesting " .. You might get the velocity you want with a 350 , best I can do with a 300 , is about 2450 , when you consider , the high temps in Africa , and chance of pressure spikes in the ammo from the heat .. You dont want a hot load over there ..
FWIW , my first bullet choice would be a soft , the Swift A-Frame .. It will get the job done in a 375 ..
Who're you booked with ?/
When ya leavin' ?
All the Best
Jack
