I just might have to check this guy out for my cast 303 boollitts, although I’m happy with the LEE Alox lube I’m using now. My biggest problem is gas checks. I have around 1500 GC without the internal crimp, but LEE advise I need the Hornady type with the internal crimp. I’m now wondering if powder coated boollitts actually need a GC. |
I run gas checks on a couple of pistol bullets, mainly my NOE clone of the Lyman 358156 HP and all but one of my rifle bullets, I use both Hornady and Gator Checks and have had no issues using either on rifles or pistols and I have Lee molds that take gas checks for both type firearms. I was using those two brands of gas check with Alox / JPW lube or my lubesizer before PC ever came along.
What Powder Coating is and actually does.

PC doesn't actually replace the gas check, but it does allow you to shoot softer alloy at a slightly higher velocity and pressure than you normally could with a non powder coated bullet. What we also have to understand is that when a bullet exits the muzzle it is being steered by the bullet's base, it's perfectly fine to shoot a bullet designed to use a gas check with it left off coated or not up to a certain velocity / pressure threshold but at some point leaving the check off is going to affect accuracy and with non-coated bullet's leading will become an issue as well. I do it all the time for plinking ammo in rifles and handguns, but for HV/ high pressure loads using softer alloys I use the check.
How I PC my bullets.
