whats the skinny on the .25/06??????
yes its little/older brother of the mighty poohseventy and fires slightly skinnier and lighter projectiles Very Happy

....but real world ,whats it like???
how well does it kill????
what projectiles make it shine???
just found a ruger for a mate that we will get our hands on next month so have a bit of time to learn more about the cartridge....
bought rifle in a houge stock
wooden stock snapped at wrist with rough repair
scoped
dies
for less than price of a budget rifle package (no not stolen)
I read the rugar 77s were heavy....24"

the heavy bit wont be an issue,mate and I both could loose much weight from our pukus before worrying about extra lb or two on a rifle
the extra weight(of rifle) SHOULD help mate who is relatively new to shooting game to shoot accurately.

Elvis, sounds like a fun project! Not a large bullet selection but you only need one good one.

"It’s one of those purported dual-purpose big-game/varmint rounds like the .243 or the .257 Roberts, but in truth it’s a pretty poor varmint load—it burns far too much powder for that. For big game, though, it has some fine qualities. Although it comes in a poor second to the .270 as an all-around big-game load, as a deer and antelope cartridge the .25/06 is unbeatable. Used with good 115-grain bullets, it will give you velocities well in excess of 3,000 fps along with very light recoil."

Back when the 25 calibers were just the thing for shooting varmints at ling range the 25-06 was one of the best things going. It also doubled as a fine light big game round as well. Remington standardized it in the mid to late sixties as I recall. (the 270 Winchester arrived in 1925). You can think of it as the 6.3 Creedmost. It will do everything the creedmore can, just a little faster.

It is a great cartridge and I have that caliber in a Winchester Model 70. I like it and have used it with complete satisfaction. My suggestion would be to try it and if is not what you want, then either trade it or have it rebarrelled to another caliber. All the best...

I had the hots for this cartridge in the early 70's but I decided it was way over bore. Light bullets (90 grains and below exit the muzzle at over3500 fps and with a standard 1 in 10 twist can be accurate to long range for varmints and small game with explosive results.
The 25-'06 really shines with the 100 to 120 grain bullets with velocities of over 3000 fps for the heaviest bullets. I wouldn't recommend moose or large bears but anything else on the North American continent is a viable target. At top velocities with heavy bullets in a light gun the recoil is easily manageable but noticeably heavier than the 257 or or 250 Savage. With the 100 grain bullet you can use up to 60 grains of powder and up to 64 grains of powder with the heavier 120 grain bullet. A muzzle brake would do wonders for the recoil but the blast is not soft at all. You can also select bulkier powders if you are willing to give up a little velocity. You are not likely to find ammo or brass without some work but you can just neck down the 30-'06 brass. The bullets are available (in the states) so components are available as long as you get brass.
Even though I went with the 257 Roberts I still have a soft spot for the 25-'06.

paul you mentioned muzzle brake.....years back the only time Ive seen a .25/06 fired was through a browning boss...you know the one??? vented muzzle vibration dampaning LOUDENER.........the dogs were out chasing wallabies and had trouble walking on back legs as after the first shot thier front paws were jammed in thier ears....mate who had it was only one shooting as the rest of us had ran back also with hands covering ears.....if this thing shoots ok it will get suppressor/muffler on it when funds allow....too bad it will be longer and heavier....if mate moans I will point at his puku/belly/beer gut and suggest that needs to go first LOL.
components not to hard to get here and factory ammo is on most/some shelves.
Im picking it will be a dual loaded rifle...a cheap light 100grn for wallabies etc and maybe a ttsx as we can buy 15 pill sample packs cheap enough to try out...or maybe partition for that 2nd role of big game stuff.
this will be my mates first rifle so Im going to make it work.

A muffler sounds like a winner to me! Maybe it will help with the recoil too.
The plan you have is a good one.
I heard that the round was popular in Europe but it is less available here.

it will be here in a couple of days....another victim of this plurry virus/lockdown. cant wait to try it out (have earplugs ) hope we can blood it over the coming weekend,wallabies shouldnt like it at all...factory federal 117grn not TOO badly priced and it will get us some donor brass and plastic holdy thingies...

I recently picked up a used Savage 110 chambered in .25-06. It's always been on my list of "gotta get one" cartridges. I plan to use it for pronghorn this year, provided I get drawn for a tag.
I currently have loads ready for testing with Hornady 90 gr. GMX, Barnes 100 gr TTSX, Nosler 115 gr Partition, and Sierra 117 gr Gamekings.. i tried Factory Remington 120 gr. corelock while sighting the temporary scope I have on it, but never got better than a 1.5" group. Suspect this is due to the 1-10 twist. Hornady factory 117 gr. held around .95 ".

yummmm partitions are good stuff..... on the list of options to try.....as dedicated deer load it was going to be them or a lighter mono,the leaning is more towatds the partition as SHOULD be able to have one load.....soft varmit projectile and same but with partition for bigger stuff
only time will tell.
hoping its the 24" barrel not the 22"
a bit of extra distance from muzzle has to be good.

barrel is 23 1/2" and looks like a pool que...... bore looks great.

well it goes bang and projectiles seem to be going where aimed...will punch paper in next week...absolutely LOVELY to fire, recoil is mild and the loud factor isn't half as bad as expected, that long pool que like barrel certainly helps.

todays effort was to convert some oddball older 270 brass into 25/06 cases....have only got neck dies for the 25/06.
so I ran them through.. measures them and as expected were 2mm too long....
so out with grinder ,whacked them down to approx size, chaptered and countersunk .then tried to chamber....yip you guessed it too tight..... oh doah I hadnt resized down to 270 dimensions first.....so took guts out of 270 FL die and ran them through HARD down.....some now chamber really good,about 60% will chamber but tight.....will go with that and see how they go.....
the only other thing I can think of is to wind the neck die down another turn and try them again,its possibly the still fat .277 section of neck engaging chamber.....any thoughts folks????
