a friend of mine gave me a heap of 40 grain 22 bullets he said were 22 Magnum Rimfire bullets (but might be Hornet bullets???? - look like the ones in the image) that I tried in my 22-250Rem (Winchester mod 70 rifle). With 40 gn W760 they ought to be travelling at about 3800 fps and are reasonably accurate (I wasn't sure they'd hold together outside the muzzle). Yesterday I shot a fox with one. Bullet didn't exit, no fur damage. Just though I'd share.

Smile Should work quite well out to 2 hundred yards-after that low BC will cause bullet drop, drift in pretty rapid order!

Is W760 not a bit slow for such a light bullet? Not that I'm shooting the 22-250, nor that I'm using Winchester powders. But I do like to use Sierra's 45 grs Hornet bullet in my .222 Rem, but then I'm using a much faster powder, N110 of Vihtavuori. And the result is simular on small varmints.

The 22 magnum should have a bullet diameter of .222, the Hornet .223, and the 22-250 .224. If they are accurate enough, shoot them up and enjoy.

Heh heh heh heh.
About 30 years ago I went spotlighting with a mate who loaded those projectiles in his 22-250. During the accuracy check we found he wasnt hitting the 100 m target at all, this thing was usually a 5 shot into 1 hole so he was a bit peed off.
When he tried again after checking scope, bore , crown etc I noticed a spray of dust abiut 30 feet in front of the muzzel in the dirt.
Thats as far as the projectiles were making it before disintergrating.
Moral of this story, dont drive projectiles designed for a max of 2500 ft sec at over 4000 ft a sec.
They do quite well in a .222 at 3000 fps.

W760 is supposed to deliver higher velocity than W748 (3993 fps c/w 3827 fps) but IMR4064 is better still. I like ball powders, but will only be buying ADI powders now (AR2208 = Varget) as they are significantly less expensive here.

Vernier callipers are not measuring any difference b/w them and Sierra 224's so not sure what these bullets are (came loose, no packaging)

Probably for Hornet-class cartridges. The Hornet was originally designed for .223" bullets, but modern makers have pretty much standardized on .224" in their barrels. They decided that the manufacturing differences were too much of a pain when weighed against the actual interest in .223" bores. The bullet manufacturers often offer both sizes, but the .223" offerings are pretty scant anymore.

If the jackets were designed for Hornet-class speeds, don't be too surprised if they start coming apart in flight due to the bullet speed/rotational stress once they are pushed past 3,400 fps or so.

Good find and cheap shooting.

22-250 is my favorite centerfire caliber. I have a Ruger #1V and its extremely accurate... and scary.

Its scary in the fact that the higher i go on the pressure scale, the tighter the groups. Its an extremely strong chamber and action. With 40gr Hollow points, I reached a point they would just disintegrate enroute the the target, presumably from rotational inertia.

I have around 3200-3500 rounds through that gun, throat is etched out to the point If I want to seat near the lands, the bullets are seated around 1/32th of a inch. its ok for bench rounds, but too fragile for hunting.

I havent shot it in a quite a few years now... but i was talking with my son about varminting, and digging it out for some much needed trigger time.

I've a couple of hundred rounds of 22-250 sat waiting for a chance to shoot them - all load development stuff with different bullets between 50 & 63 grains.
Heck, I've had the rifle (& it's big brother in .270) for ten months & neither have yet had a shot fired through them due to this bloody pandemic & the subsequent restrictions closing both my nearest ranges (fully enclosed bench areas/firing points).
