MacDE,
That is a great looking gun in a good caliber. I might want one too!

If it's as accurate as other T3 rifles, and there's no reason to believe it wouldn't be, they have themselves a winner!

Id heard they had retired the ol smellies and gone to Tikkas, was very dubious but that looks plurry good, lets hope it stands up to test of time.

Hasn't happened yet, still in trials.
They are paying $4000 for a $1300 rifle plus open sights and an enlarged trigger guard, so about $2000 for the gun, but with the contract they are getting 40000000rds of ammo.

The contracts are signed. The trials are proof of performance and very unlikely to change anything significant. Both Colt Canada and Stoeger are involved in manufacture with Stoeger doing final fit/assembly at their Whitby facility. Colt has the license from Sako. I have worked with the Rangers and they are excited about the new rifle but also cautious. They love their Lee Enfields but I believe they will find the replacement is even better.

Thanks for posting, MacD. My Tikka has been an accurate and wonderful rifle. Had some shooters eying at the range yesterday and couldn't believe how smooth the action and trigger were nor my groups of touching bullets at 100 yards. This rifle will serve Canada well.

they will have to be plurry good the beat the ol SMLE when the chips are down, its still one of the fastest most reliable bolt actions ever made, the .303 brit isnt a shabby cartridge either, I believe 90% of Kiwi hunters over age of 40 would have learnt to shoot/stalk using one,I know the big pigs and smelly ol goats I got with one taught me heaps.

Interesting rifle, but too expensive for my blood. Why did they select a bolt action? I would much prefer an M14 or even an M1 Garand. All the best...

An autoloader isn't reliable at -40 - -50C or colder.

The Rangers need a patrol rifle that can withstand the rigours of live on the fringes of civilization. The design specifications were very specific and the Rangers involved in every technical decision. Simplicity was a big factor that worked against autos. Like Repete said at -40 a sticky bolt is not a big deal but a sticky breech block or gas piston means stripping down under very unfavourable conditions. Bare fingers don't function long at those temperatures.
