walking out today after taking Nathan for a armed tramp...nearly back to wagon rifle unloaded with bolt open slung across chest, we see young folk playing in stream we are walking down,,,we get to about 20 yards away first young fella says "hello" we "hello" back
2nd young fella looks up we now about 5yards away "OH MY GOD HE'S GOT A GUN" in high pitched squeeky voice
I replied in similar voice pointing at him at same time"oh my gosh he's wearing shorts" keeping straight face was hard as we carried on walking past....you could see cogs turning as he digested what just happened....me thinks Mummy has been watching telly and young fella has picked up bad vibes.
bet he will not react the same way next time
Nathan and I were still cracking up laughing when we pulled into driveway

Too many kids are being taught that guns are automatically "evil". I’ve seen younger grown men (raised in the city) shaking the first time they handled a real gun. WE need to do a better job teaching and encouraging young people to try the shooting sports.

Great come back Elvis...he has obviously been indoctrinated by his parents. I remember as a kid we always played Cowboys and Indians with makeshift guns or cap pistols and bows and arrows, usually homemade.

Had a similar experience yesterday on the Te Iringa track (kaimanawa Forest Park N.Island NZ) Gun over shoulder Family walking past and mum talking to dad saying "did you see that; he's got a gun".
Unfortunately Im not as quick as Elvis but FFS this is one of NZ prime hunting areas - of course Ive got a bloody gun, just wish I had a deer on my back to prove just how much of a savage i really was.
BTW It was way too windy - I saw one but it saw me first - squealed and ran. - Bloody Sika!

Radar..many years back a buddy and I were hunting at Mt Somers and had just come out onto walking track,We were both wearing army surplus camo, a family group came along and asked if we were doing exercises with the army...quick as a wink we replied we were the advance guard and the tanks were following along soon....we were in really steep country with heavy mature forest all around us..... not sure what they made of that reply but we were chuckling to ourselves all day.

And to think that when I was a kid I would ride across town and out into the country with my .22 strapped to the handlebars of my bike...with no case. No one even gave it a thought.

Those days (slightly modified) may be coming back. I open carry around Ava on ocasion and no one pays any attention to me or my sidearm.

Someday, even in Illinois, this will happen.
