All societies are capable of evil when the conditions are ripe. Burning people because they are suspected of having used magic to injure someone is nothing new. It happened (or nearly happened) in the USA a couple of years ago. Three young men held a young woman who was a member of the Wiccan religion and attempted to tie her to a post and set her on fire. A wandering patrol car saw it and stopped them. The three were arrested and the girl was released to deal with her trama.
It is a "mob mentality" syndrome. People allow the group to use fear and anger to control them. Lynch mobs happen the same way.
The difference is that in the middle east people have been fighting each other since 900 BCE - 2912 years. It all started as a clan feud and has become so out of control that it will never stop.
