roklok,
I find the 'quite thrilling' comment a bit understated.
You were lucky to have the tent between you and the bear.

I can live with bears and mountain lions. I've had black bears walk within 50 yds of my house, and saw a lion about 200 yds from my house. I even chased a grizzly away from our elk camp by hitting him with a rock after two shots over his head from my .44 mag didn't bother him.

I know I'm narrow minded, but I don't have any use for anything poisonous. Black widow spiders, scorpions, rattlesnakes. The world isn't big enough for both them and me, and I plan on sticking around awhile.

Vince, you can keep those toads 'down under'. Do you use the 3-iron because a wedge won't give you enough distance?

Laughing Yep...you got that in one mate. A wedge will drop them into your next door neighbour's backyard....a 3 iron puts them over next door and into the next yard...you don't get the blame for it ROFL Or you can clear all the way across the street and onto the roof across the road Haha

Then there is of course the satisfiying "THWACK" that a 3 iron seems to produce. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Poisonous critters don't really worry me a great deal...I pretty much grew up with spiders etc all over the place. We have a Red Back Spider that is a cousin to the Black Widow. This time of year I get hundreds around my place. Talking to my neighbour yesterday...he found a 10 ft Carpet Python wtf in his kitchen a few months back. Now that is a big snake, although not poisonous. He just picked it up and put it out in the park beside our houses.

Cheers, Vince

I would worry a lot more about snakes and spiders than black bears...
Black bears are generally scared of humans and high tail it when ever there is an encounter. I have been around a lot of blacks up in Northern Wisconsin, and the only one that ever gave me a problem was one I was tracking that my son shot and I accidently cornered him. But I am not sure if he would of really hurt me or he was just trying to get past me quick... Either way it cost him his life fairly quickly Laughing
I have woken up with them trying to get into my truck at my campsite and chased them away, and have chased them with hounds, and hunted them up close with bow and arrow.... Nothing to fear.
The only way you get into trouble is if you loose your respect for them.
We have about one bear attack every few years in Wisc. and its always something the person did that caused the attack. Last year a guy had a bear with cubs come under his deer stand while bowhunting. He tried yelling at the bear to scare it off which is a commen mistake. The cubs natural defense when something startles it is to run up the nearest tree while momma fends off the attacker... The nearest tree happened to be the one the hunter was in. The cub moved fast and got above the hunter and then saw him and wouldn't come down. Momma came up and the guy tried kicking her. She bit his foot breaking a few bones, then realized it was a human and jumped down and ran off followed by the cub...
Another commen problen in Wisconsin is people going to dumps or in there back yards feeding bears to the point that they loose fear of people.
Especially when they hand feed them... Believe it or not a lot of people do that.
Here is a few pic's of bears I have shot. My 1st bear was shot with a rifle at 10 yards... I vowed to use a bow and arrows from then on...

Here is my 1st bear (30-06) Two shots thru the heart dropped him. 1st shot recieved no reaction.

Here is my second bear, a 500 pounder. The arrow passed right thru and stuck into the ground. the bear got about 20 yards after the shot.

3rd bear. 400ish pounds One arrow thru the heart. got about 20 yards.

All the bear above were taken in Wisconsin. I got this one a few months ago in Minnasotas north woods. I am due to draw another tag in Wisconsin any year now. So far the 3 bears above represent the 3 tags I have drawn in over 20 years of applieing....

Black Bear seem to be everywhere these days, at my brothers places up in the frozen north (Chippewa Falls and Radision) WI they have them coming into the backyards eating out of the bird feeders. I wonder if there really are more of them or did some food source disappear and now they're looking to replace it. WI has reintroduced Wolf and Elk. Turkeys seem to be everywhere there too now. The competition for food may be why we are now seeing more of them.
I am surprised that a Black would attack people, are they sure is wasn't a Brown, I would guess that they hunted it down. They should be able to tell the difference.

Sorry... I only get to hunt bears every now and then. We have to earn prefferance points to hunt bears in Wisc. The ones in the pictures represent every tag I have ever drawn in over 20 years of applying. I have mounted each one of them.
