How can you tell if a Model 94 Lever gun is Pre 64 or Post 64?
Any help would be gladly appreciated.
I have a Sears Model 54 I traded for and trying to figure out when it was made. Sad

Thanks

ctipock

See if this link will work for you...

oldguns.net/sn_php/remdates.php

On left side of page scroll down to: Manufacture Dates,

Click on Winchester,

Click on Model 1894 (Mod 94),

A “WINCHESTER DATES OF MANUFACTURE” box will come up, follow instructions.

Hope this helps, Smile
Chet

There Must be a seperate serial numbering for these guns,I put the serial number in and it said made in 1895, it has a blueless reciever, its seen some service but still has strong rifling barrel is 20 in. and sticks out past magazine tube just slightly.
Thanks for that information.

No problem, Smile wish it had worked! Sad
BTW, Welcome to Hunting Nut Very Happy

Your rifle is definitely a Winchester, according to Numrich Gun Parts. Sears sold the Winchester 94 as their model 54. I don’t know why but there were 5 different designations. Confused

HOUSE BRAND____MODEL NO____ORIG MFGR. ____ORIG. MODEL
Sears 54_________273.2120_____Winchester________NM 94
Sears 54_________273.532140___Winchester________NM 94
Sears 54_________273.53419____Winchester________NM 94
Sears 54_________273.810_______Winchester_______NM 94
Sears 54_________273.811_______Winchester_______NM 94

NM= New model?
Maybe some of our Winchester “nuts” here can give a little more insight on the subject.

I picked up a Model 94 Winchester this week and thought it was a pre-'64. Using the Old Guns serial number search data I learned it was made in 1966. I also checked a Model 12 in 20 gauge and thought it was from the 1930s. Old Guns confirmed it was made in 1929. All the best...

just a guess but the blueless reciever definitely sounds to me like a post 64 gun. Winchester switched from blueing their recievers to some sort of a paintlike coating in 64.The coating did not hold up well and it is common to see specimens with almost no finish on reciever.I have a 94 built in 71(NRA centennial rifle)that has seen no use and even on that gun you can see the finish starting to crack at the edges.

Ctipock, Howdy
Well, I’ll be... afellow born Highlander, it's small world! Shocked
I was also born and raised on the Cumberland Plateau, only for me, Crossville. Moved to Kingston about 15 years ago. My folks still reside just a few miles northwest of Crossville. Your right about the Big South Fork area…. but let’s keep that our secret. Censored Ignore Laughing Laughing Laughing

From everything I can find the chance of your rifle being a pre 64 model looks to be very slim. I would enjoy shooting it, regardless. Very Happy

Feel free to PM me anytime, Cheers
Chet

You need to talk to the expert on Mod 94 Winchesters...Give me a moment and I will be able to answer your question...If you have the serial number of your winchester it would help...Just list the number all except the last three numbers...

Aah...Here it is...Sears mod 54 was started in 1965...If it is a Sears, Roebuck it probably is not a pre 64...1964 Winchester mod 94's will be in the neighborhood of late 2,600,000 to the early 2,700,000 serial numbers...

I have serial number data from the Mod 94's begining to 1992....Mine is 1,608,XXX manufactured in 1948...

OK, Bushmaster.... who did you call? Shocked Hiding

Seriously..... Good post. It's real good to have a Winchester Xpert on board. Cool Smile

No...Not a Winchester expert...A Mod 94 Winchester expert. And thank you...We try...Even if we DO get deleted on occasion.....................

And I didn't call anyone...I called up my files (pre-computer) for this question. By The Way...Mine still hunts...Use it for pigs mostly these days. Have one good load combination for my WCF...Does a fine job on Feral pig...

Years ago (watch the "old" jokes) I wanted to know what year my .30-30 was manufactured. This was before computers...I knew that mine had to be older then most. As of late so many people haven't a clue as to the age of their WCF's and try to fake it or brag that theirs is a certain age. I love to debunk them...

ctipock is asking a ligit question. If I had the serial number less the last 3 digits I might be able to give him an idea of the age of his Sears Mod 54...

Bushmaster the serial number is 149xx and its a sears model 54.
I plan on using mine, here most shots are about 100 yards on deer and hogs, mine has the holes for scope mount on side, and two smaller holes near the rear close together is that for a reciever sight like the williams or lyman sight?
The guy gave me some winchester 150gr. power points and some PMC's that are hollow points with the rifle. Never seen the hollow points before in 30-30.
Thanks for the help..
The reason Im trying find the date is for parts replacement never owned a winchester lever gun ,always wanted one,had a marlin 444 one time never really liked it . Ive had this 30-30 2days and wouldnt let it go for nothing,It'll be passed on to my kids.

Thanks all I'll be sticking around alot to read here... Smile

O K ctipock...The number 273 indicates that it is manufactured by Winchester Mod 54 is the lever action sometimes confused with Mod 53 which is Sears' version of the Winchester mod 70...As I don't have your last two numbers of your serial number (and I don't want them) they should indicate the year made. Yours should be the 149th one made in that year...If the two last two numbers don't make sense as to being after 64 then I'm lost too...

By The Way...NEVER GIVE THE COMPLETE SERIAL NUMBER OVER THE INTERNET FOR ANY REASON...A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE ARE NOT AS HONEST AS I...
