Doh!!,

I forgot about windows 8. It's different than wndows 2008 server, seems like your best bet would be to wait for the Ubuntu disc.

Thats also what I have been told by my in house computer expert.
Regardless, it is still a dead brain product.

Get used to it shrpshtr. If you use the desktop instead of the screen with all the tiles you'll be on more familiar ground. It's not so bad really and it's super fast. It's just that (for me) I got around a few things using Ubuntu. Never had to worry about virus protection and the associated cost of subscriptions. Updates are a wiz and it doesn't take up much space on the computer which frees up some memory for applications to use. Oh and it only cost me about $10 including shipping. Basically it's free but you have to down-load about 600+mb to get it.

I just spent an entire weekend and another part of a weekend installing Ubuntu 12.10 and now I've got some little glitches to work out. Pain the tush but it's well worth the effort to me. I now have Win 8 and Ubuntu on the same computer, it's just a bit tricky now to get Windows to lite up. I'll figure it out sooner or later.

I get Norton antivirus free with my Comcast. People say it doesn't work well with win 8 that it slows it down I'm not sure if that's true or not. This new computer is twice as fast as the old one Very Happy

I run Microsoft Security Essentials in the background with Windows Defender turned off. (uses less resource this way)
I then open, update and run Super Antispyware and Malwarebytes about once a week.

It's all free and said to be some of the best protection you can get !!!

Until you get a nasty little virus that is targeted at Security Essentials itself. When that happened to me it would not let essentials update or even perform a scan. It wouldn't even let me use my backup program so I had to uninstall essentials, load in a new antivirus and then uninstall it and reinstall Essentials and defender - then I finally got rid of it and for a week all was well. Then it came back and I had to wipe the drive and completely reload windows. Meanwhile my Linux computer just ticks along without any problems.

I got the virus while searching for loads for my 358 Winchester - on the 7th page of the search. I had Essentials running and real-time protection running. windows is just not very secure and never has been.
I rarely use the Windows computer on-line anymore. I just use it for my cad software and point blank.
I use my own DOS software for my reloads database (inconvenient when I am doing something else in Linux but it is accessible when I need to reload.

Wouldn't a safe mode start-up allowed you to use a back-up program ???
I've also been told to install the back-up program(s) to an external drive.... any thought on that as well ???

The one time I had a trojan wreck havoc I used the back in time feature and was able to fix the problem !!!

I had no function of the back-up or restore program in Win 7 - it wouldn't run at all.
I have three drives on my win desktop and the third is used only for back-up. It might as well not be there if you can't get to it.

Since then I have gotten a boot dvd with macrium reflex on it and I do my back-ups as cloned copies - still stored on the third drive but accessable from the DVD boot disk. Now, when I have the problem again, I can just restore the clone copy and all is well. I still let windows do its back-up weekly but I don't plan on ever using it.

Holy crap... Windoze7 updated internet explorer to v10 on me... that thing is uber terrible! Amazing the developers made it so clunky and un-intuative. I finally just uninstalled it and went back to v8 (9 is terrible as well).

I've tried other browsers but even they are incompatable with alot of sites I use.

I dont see any reason to step up from win7 to anything newer... not for a long long time anyway.
