I was visiting a new gun shop today and spending time looking over the used gun racks. I spotted two M1 Garands and asked to look at them. The first M1 was in NRA fair condition and showed hard use or abuse and did not interest me. The second M1 was in mint condition in and out with a lovely walnut stock with all the cartouches intact. The hang tag said a manual went with the rifle. The manual was the G.I training handbook for the M1 Garand that the CMP sent with the rifle. This is a CMP collector grade rifle.
The gun shop gives customers 15 percent discounts on used guns if you have a coupon. I did not have one, so the clerk got one for me. We did the paperwork and the rifle came home with me. The rifle is in the five million serial number range and Old Guns website at www.oldguns.net says the rifler was made in 1955. What a find and what a bargain price! All the best...

Nice find Gil - is the barrel a 1955 too? A friend of mine got a rack grade that appeared to have been arsenal rebuilt and never fired.
I got mine in 1987 for $185. It is a 1943 and it shows its age. I am shooting it Sunday in a club match. mis matched stock TE an MW are in red and say I need a new barrel but it still holds 2.5" at 100 yards.

Great find, Gil! You have good luck bringing home quality finds! Are you going to shoot it or keep it as a collector?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
You have no idea the damage to ones physc that occurs when people discuss firearms that are banned to me, ones Ive always admired and almost had before they were banned and at prices we could never even think of here.
Gil, great find, hope it shoots well, chuck a few down range for me.
Cheers

I am in the same boat Pete. I was offered a beautiful example some years ago when posted to Holsworthy...I'm glad I didn't buy it because it would have broken my heart to have to hand it in for destruction.
Great find Gil...I don't know how you do it mate, but you always seem to be in the right place at the right time.
Cheers, Vince

I think 1955 was a good year because I'm still alive and fully functional
And don't laugh but about 2 weeks ago I shot the Garant the first time in my live, a friend let me. Have to admit it shoots rather smooth, but I'm not so big friends with such clips... so this week I joined Dimitri's club and got me an SA-FN49 (chambered in 7x64 because the original 30-06 was a difficult-to-get-permit a few years ago).

The rifle appears to be original with no signs of wear or use. We have a match today, but I do not want to shoot it in the pouring rain. I have another M1 Garand that I got some years ago for $319.00 and replaced the stock and it looks like new. I shoot that in most of our rifle matches. All the best..

Nice find Gil. I swear I'm going to get one some day. CMP has field grade for $495 and a few service grade for $895.....Think I'll start a fund, sell the boat, and any wayward kids I can find at the local nursery, they gotta be worth sumptin.

now dont get upset you Aussie guys but we can buy Norinco copies of the M14 over here brand spanking new for around $400 and can get them with a full supressor for around $500. yeah they arent the original thing but pretty darn good all the same. now Suz I do like those fund raising ideas....
