Every morning on his way to work in the new burrow complex, Peter Rabbit went to the rabbit take away shop and ordered two toasted ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch. One day they had no ham, so he had cheese and onion toasted sandwiches. The next day they had plenty of ham , but no cheese, so he had ham and onion toasted sandwiches. That night Peter didnt come home from work, and Mrs Peter Rabbit was extremely worried. So she rang the emergency services and told them the problem, they commenced to search aof Peter and finally found him gasping his last in the new excavations. The paramedic rabbit was sith Peter and asked him what was the problem? In his last breath Peter could only gasp one word, MYXAMYTOASTIES

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myxomatosis
its a rabbit disease that is artificially introduced in Australia to allegedly control rabbit population in Australia.
It works for a while, until them rabbit develop immunity.

That's the problem with rabbits: in spring there are many, causing lots of damage to farmers and afterwards every year they get myxomatosis and most of them die before huntingseason opens.
And a few years ago together with frozen rabbits imported from China came another disease: the V.H.S.
Where myxomatose doesn't infect hare and 'only' about 90 % rabbits die, V.H.S. also gets hare and 100 % dies.
Life's tough when you're a rabbit...

wait till RCD / rabbit calvicy virus diesease hits then you will have some thing to moan about. its taken 13 years for the bunnies to build up immunity ti it here and breed up in any numbers.

Calici doesn't seem to work in the cold climates very well Elvis. The areas they released Calici over here were cleaned out real quick...except for the cold areas...luckily for me 'cause the area I hunt is very cold in winter.
I've heard talk that the CSIRO is trying to develop a "cold climate" version though.
Cheers, Vince

Seems we were talking about the same thing:
Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) = VHD (viral haemorrhagic disease) = VHS (viraal hemorragisch syndroom) = a rabbit disease caused by the calicivirus.
first discovered in China.

We get myxy passing through here now & again. Seems to be fairly localised at present, with most of the farms I bunny hunt on being unaffected - maybe because we keep them from being overpopulated.

When they introduced RCD/Calecie whatever you want to call it, here it wiped out the rabbit industry, and its only just started up again in the last few years. Put couple of hundred shooters out of work, and now there are only 4 working in town here. Population 1100 at Hillston. We had two rabbit chillers and one process works in town and they were sending over 2 million bunnies out each year. There were chillers in just about every town in western NSW, now just couple and only one process works. In those days, about 15 to 20 years ago it was possible to get up to 250 pair of rabbits per night, now a good night is 70 to 100. I dont know what its like in the other states, but the bloke I sell to used to buy rabbits from western Victoria, south Aust, NSW and Queensland, he had about 50 blokes shooting for him, now just the four of us in Hillston. Still you can make a good living at it if you are prepared to work at it and sort of farm them out and dont shoot the hell out of your properties.
