I've been looking into making a cheek rest for my .17 Savage. Kydex, the stuff plastic holsters and knife sheaths are made of is also used to make cheek rests. So I looked into how it's done and thought I'd share some links with you Nuts:

You are a champion Suz. I fired a few 12g rounds at some clays the other day and my cheek was a little tender afterwards where I had the radio therapy. I am looking at doing something similar to "cushion" things a bit there and this might be just the thing. Thanks mate. Cheers

Well Vinnie maybe something pillow-like instead. Get your sewing machine out and tear apart an old pillow for the stuffing, cut off a pant leg (from those pants you're in love with but just can't throw away) and stuff it and sew up the ends. You've probably only got one dominant leg anyway. If you sew velcro strips into the bottom (you don't want velcro on your face, it's hard and stiff (so that's what she said?) you can either wrap around the stock or use sticky velcro and stick it to the stock.

My scope is too high on my Savage, they built the stock with a down-slope butt and it's great for iron sights but not with a scope. I swear I need about a 3 or 4 finger rise to get my eyes in line with the scope. This Kydex is great, you can actually use boiling water instead of a heat gun to get it soft enough. I think I ordered some that might be too thin, but maybe I can double up on it. It's supposed to arrive here tomorrow.

Sounds good Suz...doubling up on thickness shouldn't be a real problem.

Now here's a thought...what about a custom built butt stock from the Suz Custom Workshop? Not sure if the butt stock and the forend are all one piece, but I feel certain that you are more than capable of making something along these lines.

I am looking at a cheek piece made of some very thin vinyl with an EVA filling. That will give me a cheek piece and I can also extend it upward to increase the height of the stock, much the same as the butt stock ammo carriers that are available.

There are other ways of doing it...hardcore Trap and Skeet shooters do all sorts of weird and wonderful things to their stocks..."Twisters" on the back to align the stock more with the shape of their shoulder, can also be extended to lengthen the pull, also adjustable cheek pieces that can be raised or lowed, and often tilted as well, to get the "perfect" alignment. I thought about this on my 12g, but it is really a firld gun, not a target gun. so I thought NAH...keep it original and put a removable cheek piece on it.

Yeh Vinnie, I didn't think of that. I'm goin the simple route. I can make one that is adjustable by putting slots in the bolt attachments (for up and down movement) but I'm thinking it will loosen and drop with the shot...no it won't...it's only a .17 , no recoil there. Those links you gave (for some reason) crashed my Firefox browser. I tried to link outside the current window too. I can't get on gunfitter.com. Oh well that would be pretty nice on a shot gun, to have the butt of it adjustable. I've seen someone on here has that set-up.

Suz, you'll be amazed what you can do with some plastic tape (to protect the stock), a small piece of a flat plastic bottle and some PUR...
and the right Chinese will sell you 'velly cheap' something to cover up your adds and you'll have at the same time on the right a nice stock of extra rounds. Have I never send you a picture of my dirty Mauser stutzen in 7x57? To give him some extra value I put a nice piece of stockwood from a Blazer on top of its stock and recently somebody brought a Timney trigger from the States. When you don't count the hours, just the costs and have a look at its performance, you'll understand that rifle makes me happy. With some rounds with Nozzler's balistic tip in its sidepurse, it looks as a beauty with sexy-red painted nails...

Aloysius.....I want to see it! Your language skills have come a long way. It's a dirty Muaser because it's Swedish? I like my German 98s, but I bet your Swede is more accurate. Timney triggers are wonderful, but I have a pair of Bold triggers that work great too and they are less expensive. Ok I'll have to save up my water bottles and make cheek rests out of them. I don't understand PUR??? How do you attach it to the stock?

fast because I have a meeting this evening (and I'm the secretary, so I should be there).
It's not a Swedish but a converted K-98, a short stutzen, with wood till the end of the barrel.
And if you should know the price of Timney here... now a friend bought me 2 of them and it's cheaper then buying 1 here or in Germany.
And PUR = poly-urethane. It's that yellow/orange foam that's used to isolate your roof or make a taxidermist form of animals.

And I used PUR in the beginning, but now I have replaced it with a piece of Blazer stock. I don't have the money to buy a Blazer, so I only put a little piece of it on my shooter (just to make fun of some friends that do shoot these expensive guns Smile

)

That's strange Suz...I use Firefox as well (streets ahead of IE) and didn't have any problems. I just tried opening the links from the post and it worked ok. It has a small flash file in it, so maybe you need to upgrade your Add-ons mate.

I bet that's what it is Vinnie...I use an operating system (Ubuntu/Lynux) that doesn't upgrade very much and the FireFox program doesn't keep up with upgrades much either. I've had that happen on other web addresses. It'll be alright on a site, then crash if I go to another page. It readily restarts, but you can't get around those crashes...I bet it's the flash files. I really should get this one off of my computer and get the upgraded version of Ubuntu.

If your using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS or newer, they are still upgradeable. Click System, Administration, Update Manager.

Hey Omni!! Yeah I regularly upgrade it but the Firefox extension rarely gets any attention from the upgrades. It's been this way for years. I can live with it, this system is way faster than Winblows and less trouble. Actually my update manager doesn't work, so I have to go into the terminal and type in 'sudo apt-get upgrade' , which reminds me, I should do that today.
