I used the outer templates to paint the brown leaves in select locations. Unlike the leaves on the base coat, I only did one or two at a time. The blue masking tape doesn't leave a glue residue but it didn't leave a clean paint line as shown in this picture. This was my disappointment in the final product. I should have probably used the new green masking tape - I heard it seals better. Still, an acceptable look for a 50+ year old shotgun that I've converted to a slug gun. Accuracy results will follow in a week or two. |
Actually, the camo effect may be better with the "fuzzy" outline.

I installed a Tasco ProPoint III red-dot sight forward of the breech on the slug gun and went to sight it in this morning and maybe do some hunting before noon. Its a 15-yr old red-dot. I fired one slug and it was within 8" of the mark at 50 yards. But, when I went to adjust the elevation and windage, I noticed significant parallax. Small head movements drove the red-dot around – easily 4 or 5 inches off at 50 yards. I started checking closer and the parallax was only 15 yards away. It would have been worthless to continue so I brought the gun back home and mounted my Leupold 2.5x Scout Scope on it. I will try again in a week or two.

Had to run a way from the keyboard for a short spell to fix the printer for the wife ....
Are red-dot sight normally close in for parallax or can you get them set for 100 yards?

Slim I just bought a Bushnell red dot and looked through the little pamphlet that came with it. Doesn't say anything about parallax. Never noticed any problems with this one, but I had another one that was useless at 25yds. This one seems right on. My other one was a cheapo Walllyworld special that I actually threw away because it angered me to try and use it.....how can that help you? I dunno...felt like writing...sure like your camo job, I'm gonna use some of that Krylon paint on my .17 that is butt ugly with commercial camo, do you think the paint will adhere good enough to not chip on metal?

I did some internet checking. Many red-dots didn't list their parallax setting. Of those that did, most were 25 yards with a few at 50 yards. Found one Burris at 60 yards. The very high-end ones like EOTech are parallax free. Their optics must be high enough quality to be collimated at infinity.

The Bushnell Halo is basically a EOTech in a different wrapper !!!

Should have also mentioned...........
Not that I'm trying to diminish any concerns about parallax (they are real) but you need to keep in mind that the brain has the natural ability to center objects. Whenever you look through a opening no matter the size you will unconsciously move your head centering the object you are focusing on. The smaller the hole your looking through the harder you tend to focus on that particular object thus helping to eliminate the potential of parallax.

15 yard parallax setting is an interesting experience and gave me no confidence where my POA or POI was. That red-dot isn't going back on any of my guns.

Yes Slim I hear you, I told my cousin to come and hunt deer with us 2010 and he bought his 44mag ruger and it had a burris scope on the redhawk (he owns a machine shop) and he told me it was the latest and greatest. Skeptical as I am, this thing was unbelievable, sighted in at 50yards, the scope auto magically raises the point of impact for you. Its the Eliminator laser scope that he machined to the top of the SW. When you target an object, and .........never mind. click the link below to see for your self.
Laser Scope
It is a great scope, price is not......almost $1300.00

Gotta have confidence in your equipment.........won't argue that one bit !!!
I will bet you however if your were to re-mount that dot and give it an honest go your groups will be well within a minute of deer.
At worst probably in the neighborhood of 3-3 1/2 inches..........unless there's something truly wrong with it or the gun.

Confidence is gone! It was easy to get 3-3 1/2 inches of parallax error at 25 yards. I could probably live with that at 100 but not 25 yards.

Well, got to the range today to sight-in the slug gun I just camo painted. One of those trips that starts with excitements and ends with .... I had mounted my Leupold 2.5 scout scope in place of the red-dot that had a parallax setting of 13 yards.
The first shot with Federal slugs at 50 yards was on in elevation but off to the right. Made a correction and it printed 3 slugs in a 3" grouping. Not bad for generic Federals. So I pulled out my Brenneke slugs and shot at 100 yards. In the past I would achieve 3" to 4" groups with this ammo. Not this time, it was a 7" group - my jaw dropped. So I tried the Federals at 100 yards - no better. Decided to stop then changed my mind and shot one more group at 50 yards with the Federals. After I shot the black dot fell off the paper but the group wasn't as good as the first one. Looks like I shouldn't have scrubbed the years of lead out of the barrel.
