The news is that the shakes could contiune for months, they have had a number of large aftershoks graeter than 5 on the richter scale and thats not a bad jolt in itself. People are trying to put it behind them and get on with their lives but there sure is a large number of people who have been done over big time.
The NZ Govt website that gives the best idea on quakes and tremors is
www.geonet.org.nz this has all the quake drum recordings, the volcanics and tsunami type warnings and events on it, its a site I use at work whenever mother earth deciedes to give us a wake up call. Its a cool site to muck around in.
I live within 50 km of White Island an active marine volcanoe and its got web cams and everything, if youre ever in NZ the day trip out to the island and walk around the inner cone is bloody awesome - that was my 40th Bday prez a couple of years ago. But I cheated and flew out in a chopper.
All in all NZ is a very active country bordering on two major tectonic plates hence all our activity.
