I've been having a look at the idea of wooden screws...I rather like them...they look quite smart, and I would assume that they can be tightened fairly well.

I like the ideas you have incorporated into your rest Suz...so much so, I am actually thinking about making up a work / cleaning platform for my rifles.

I've also thought of some other ideas I can incorporate wooden screws into...I really like the look of them.

Cheers, Vince

Well thanks Vince! Would love to know your ideas, I lovem too and just don't have enough of them. I've looked over some old antique stuff to look for screws but mostly the old woodworking clamps (cramps) are all I see with the screws. Yes they are very tough and you can really crank them down. I have an old wooden screw that is about as thick as your arm, was used on an old sailboat, don't know what it did but it was given to me as a gift from my grandpa. He said it came off an old sailing vessel that sailed around the cape. A man of many stories, he was quite the adventurer though.

Clamps and cramps are what I have in mind, but even something as simple as a nutcracker is different and something new to play with.

Wow...that is some big screw...hard to say what it was used for...but it is great just to have as a conversation piece.

I think a fore-end rest with a wooden height ajust screw wound get a few looks at the range. I don't deal with wood though - I mean I can make sawdust with the worst of them but to make a "finished" project is a bit more than my patience can deal with.
On the other hand I can make anything out of metal
And I do!

Ok, Suzanne, I love things made out of wood. It just gives you a nice soft touch. But.........................I have a concern. It looks like the forend rest is made of 1x wood. You have a support part way up but if you are shooting anything with recoil I would worry the top half of the support might split off. I know, being a stick in the mud, I am always doing.
I like the design. It looks light enough to carry to range easy enough.
Just a thought.

I somewhat think in the same reasoning.
Although the wooden screw does looks mighty fine on the clamp, but,
would it withstand the violent shock of recoils?
Also, would the screw be on the way whenever you grip the rifle?

Well I've used this set-up for my 8mm Mauser and the forend part of the shooting rest doesn't have any stress on it at all. I've made a velcro strap to hold the gun down. It looks like 1x but it's actually plywood and some of it is ply on top of ply glued with epoxy and screwed down. Super strong. The part that may break out is the area I recently made with the screw. First off the screw is only going to be used while sighting in a scope. I can set the rifle level, take a shot and adjust, and repeat a few times but I won't shoot it that way for long because I want it against my shoulder for shooting a few rounds in a string. I can sight-in a scope with about 3 or 4 shots. Tell ya the technique if you really wanna know....Geland I think you're right about the screw being in the way...I have to put my arm under it to pull the trigger, but it is comfortable and really I won't shoot it much with the screw anyway. The photos show the two positions of the rifle butt in the clamp. One is on the inside and one has the rifle butt extending to the outside. With the rifle butt on the inside when I shoot the rest will take the impact and maybe break. The recoil pad and leather will take the impact, but I don't know how it will hold up. The reason I put the screw on the shooting rest is because when I sight-in a scope I need the rifle to be in the same position after the shot. As light as my shooting rest and portable table are they both bounce when I shoot, even with shot holding them down, but I can get back to the position fairly closely (it aint perfect fer sher) and then adjust my scope and shoot again. I haven't tried it with the clamp yet. Ok I'm takin pictures right now

just a sec.
Suz

Ok here's photos of the portable shooting bench---the bench with the shooting rest on it---and blah blah blah I'll explain.....First the bench...on the shooting rest there is a wooden hand wheel to elevate it as needed. There is a small post behind the hand wheel (which you can see on the bench) to keep it aligned. The black hand wheel is to attach the rest to the bench. On one leg near the top is a blue plastic box that has a hole in it to place spent brass. The front leg is adjustable up and down and it also pivots for uneven ground, you can put some weights on it to hold it down. It's made out of pvc pipe.

This photo has the shooting rest attached to the bench

This is the up and down adjustment for the rest

The whole shebang with a beautiful Hakim mounted

This is the front adjustable leg

Funny the pictures came out in a different order than i posted them, but they're labeled right. Yes it's light weight and probably won't hold up very long but I've used it for a couple years now and seems to be holding up ok. I just repair as needed. It's almost a pogo stick sometimes with the heavier rounds, but anyway I don't use it much, mostly to sight-in and then shoot some short strings of shots. The rifle has always been against my shoulder, but I now I can see how well the shooting rest holds up to abuse. It won't be that brutal with the recoil pad. Don't think I'd put my non-padded rifles on there the metal would surely break something. Any questions?Any answers?

Nice Bench Rest Suz...... Smile

Here's a metal bench rest I built about 20 years ago, and still use when I am working up new loads. I have built a few the same for other people that used mine. As you can see there are three adjusting legs on it.

The rifle is my Model 788 Remington 22-250 I bought in the late 70's, great coyote rifle.
