My brother is looking into a new gun. He wants something big that can shoot from "miles" away. Probably will hunt elk more than anything, but he mostly just wants something that packs a punch. He's got it narrowed down to 300wsm (which i already own) .325, or .338 (which is favored at this point) Thoughts? Pro's/cons?

And also, the gun will probably be Rem 700 or Win 70, anything suggestions on those or something comparable in price and quality?

How's your relationship, if he gets a .300 will you be barrowing ammunition from him or will he be stealing it from you?

Ha ha, sharing ammo is an upside we are looking at. I reload so that is a consideration too. Anyone know what you can reload a box of 338 win mags for? (hornady bullets) How is their trajectory/veloctity?

I have shot elk with 4 different calibers over the years. A 270, a 30-06, a 7mm Mag, and a 338. All of them were dead when I walked up to them. In my opinion a 338 is a little much for elk although some will say it is the best. I bought my 338 for moose up in Alaska, that is the only reason I own it. It is pretty expensive to shoot, especially if you shoot factory bullets. I always go back to my 30-06 for everything except moose. The most important thing is being comfortable with whatever you shoot and placing the shot properly!
My 338 is a Winchester Model 70 with the B.O.S.S. The B.O.S.S. also helps tame recoil, I would say felt recoil is about the same as my 30-06. Another good thing about the B.O.S.S. is that you can "tune" the gun to different bullet weights. On elk and moose in the 338, I use the Winchester Supreme Silvertip 200 grain bullets. These bullets shoot pretty flat for a 338. Great gun, shoots good.
