Received this email from a mate this morning...I near cried when I saw it....a terrible waste of a beautiful revolver...and its all shiny too Stoves.

"A guy came into our department the other day to ask a favor. He had a S&W 629 that he wanted to dispose of after a mishap at the range. He said there was a loud bang when he tested his new load and the gun smacked him in the forehead, leaving a nice gash. When the tweety birds cleared, this is what he saw....."

Seems to me as to how the Smith was already disposed of..... Very Happy Probably that which hit him in the forehead was either the rear sight or the top strap. Very lucky fella that was.
Best,
Ed

Ooookaaaay.... a triple chain-fire? Never seen a KB that bad before in a center fire pistol. That's a lot of hot steel flying! Shocked

Here's a great example of why I hand-load, one atta time, my full power stuff. Each charge is trickle weighed EXACTLY to the grain by hand and loaded one atta time. Takes forever but....my six-shooter won't become a three-shooter.

Combat and plinker laods get full progressive loading but not the full power stuff. No way, no how.

That's a crazy lookin pic...wonder how genuine it is. That must have made on hell of a boom, (3) .44m going off at once unbreeched?

Shocked Shocked Shocked ...WHAT? WHAT??!!!..... Laughing

Stovey...I can "one up" you on this one...I weigh EVERY powder charge. No matter what the level of charge is. Light or heavy. Very Happy

A double charge might be a bit difficult with H110, W-296 and 2400. But, powders like W-321 and others it would be quite easy. Especially if one is watching TV while reloading or any other unwarrented distraction...A barrel obstruction could cause this too.

C'mon guys, it's just a Smith.......
A Ruger would still be in one piece.

Still, sad to see any gun shot to pieces like that.

Copy that Bushy.

I check every 10th one and the drop hole for obstructions (never had one thankfully) when going progressive with the plinkers but...yer right. No substitute for checking EVERY one and I don't go near the press when pooped or distracted.

Doing OK. Got back from seeing my mom yesterday - the next time will be at her funeral.
I started setting up my new reloading room and I will try to post pics when it is done.
More on-topic, I always check each case - whether it is for plinking or full power loads. There is no substitute for safety.

Dam! What a waste of a nice gun!

Yeah looks like over load, but why would it rips the other cartridges beside the top one too?

Them S&W are made very well, and should handle mild over loads quite handily, but this is definitely strange!! It is way too harsh!!

Could it be because the projectile fail to go into the barrel (by whatever reason)
and create a dead end obstruction thus detonating the gun like a grenade.
It could be due to wrong size pellets (maybe a .45 instead of a .44)
Could htat be the reason the proj is lodged in the forcing cone even after the violent detonation?

Either way it is scary to think about it.
